Thoughts about Iran...
I learned today we will be sending in two more carriers for a total of 4 off the coast of Iran. You may think it's posturing, that we don't have the men for it, but think again. All Bush has to do is say Iran has attacked one of the carriers, facts don't matter, and we'd have another rush of idiots joining. And if that's not enough then whats to stop them from starting a new draft? A draft could put millions of the young "me, I'm special" generation to work.
I don't think this is too far fetched...

We do not need a draft. We have plenty of men and equipment to level any countries army. What we do not have is the will to use them to perpetrate the carnage necessary on our enemies.
Here is what I posted on another thread about this very subject earlier tonight:
The President may be dealing with the Iranian question right now.
1. Elevated Naval presence in area.
2. Elevated troop levels in theater.
3. Forward deployed Squadron of F-22's, all be it to Okinawa. Still closer than Langley and removed from a Iranian first strike on Dubai.
4. Accelerated and elevated deployment of JSTARS to theater.
It will go one of two ways:
The US will have a "Red Rover" battle plan.
That is:
1. F-117 and B-2 go after AA and C4 sites.
2. F-22 fly CAP
3. Ground forces take up positions on border and wait for Iranian ground forces to "Come Over". Hence the "Red Rover" nomanclature. JSTARS will see any ground movement far in advance of any ground contact at the border.
4. Once Air Superiority is established, Air Assets go on a grand tour and level all nuclear facilities.
That is if they come to us, we will not invade. We will target military/nuclear facilites only. Sort of the Kosovo model.
Or the Iranians will go down just like the Iraqis did in Gulf One:
Their radar screens will be nothing but white.
They'll launch about 5 aircraft, all will be instantly destroyed. The rest of their air force dies on the ground.
The cruise missiles will be flying down the streets of Tehran like a Pakistani cab driver in New York.
Their ground forces will be immolated at their assembly points.
Those that may make it across the Iraqi border will be taken out my Abrams tanks at a distance where they can't even return fire.
Air superiority in four days, target at will after that.
Either way, Iran gets it ass handed to them. And the Democrats will be inconsolable.

Let me chime in here, Scoody. While we can certainly inflict severe damage on Iran, I'm pretty certain we don't have the forces to occupy and control Iran at the current time given our commitment in Iraq....in fact, not even close.

First, you would need to get the F-22s into theater....and we don't have all that many. You would fly other A/C like the F/A-18, F-15, F-16 as CAP as well.

That's if the Iranians are really stupid and haven't been paying attention to Iraq.

Certainly would target all the ones we could find.

Most of what you say here is true except for the Iranian Army's actions.....I don't see them putting a concerted effort into fighting US forces in a conventional fashion. That would be suicide. They will fall back, put up sporadic resistance and eventually disappear to later become......an insurgency, probably worse than the one in Iraq.

No shit...why would we even think about invading Iran...when bunker buster bombs would serve our purposes just fine...and you use to work in war planing?

There will be no insurgency to fight in Iran because we will have no intention of occupying Iran. The Mullahs are far from popular in Iran. With no army left to defend them, the people of Iran will do what needs to be done.
Seal the border with Iraq, run cross border bombing raids when any assembly point is identified and take out every air defense capability as soon as it is even close to operable. Iran can rot. With bombers, ground attack aircraft and a vigorous defense of the Iraqi borders, they can be kept in the stone age they love so much for decades.

I say to you too, there would be no insurgency to fight in Iran because there would be no occupation of Iran. Sure, I think we should invade Iran. Run our tanks from the Iraqi border to the Afghan Border to the Caspin Sea and the Straits of Hormuz, kill everything that moves, then pull our troops back into Iraq and Afghanistan. Any insurgency will be fought by what is left of the Iranian Government. It won't be our problem.

Gee, Scoody, that sounds eerily familiar....like Iraq in 2003. Didn't we assume that in their infinite joy to be rid of Saddam that the Iraqis would just empbrace democracy and us once we freed them???? I don't know, Scoody....I think that kind of idealism got us in trouble in Iraq in the first place, didn't it??

Seal the border with Iraq??? Shit, how come we are not doing that now...with Syria and Saudi Arabia, too? Well, because we don't have the means. And they can be kept in the stone age for decades?? Again, Scoody, I hate to break it to you, but we are not going to be in Iraq in force for decades.
If we do anything to Iran, it will be a coercive strike only.....cruise missiles, B-2s, fighters and jammers. The goal will either be to coerce them in some manner or hit their nuclear sites....at least, the ones we can find. The only strike back potential that the Iranians have is their TBMs....probably against our bases in Bahrain and our allies. Bottom line, Scoody: There will be no ground war in Iran....at least, not in the foreseeable futrure.

Iran can be taken without firing one shot, Naval blockade in the gulf, a front on either side, and wait. The have no way of refining the crude oil that comes from that part of the world, they will run out of energy. They are currently trying to buy the machinery needed to refine their type of crude into gas, but there are only three contries in the world that that have the tech. that they need. The US, Canada, and Japan. They had a deal working with Japan and a certain intrest group gave Japan a call and neg. were suspended. Preperations are indeed being made to face the impending attempt to face the US down via the international Comun. We shall have to wait and see what will happen. The US will not make the first move, contary to what opinion some may have. They are only making preperations for all contingencies. When Iran says that they are going to bring the west to their knees, preperations had better be made. BD

I'm endlessly amazed by the lack of understanding of basic human psychology that this kind of thought process lacks. If you go to any major city in the US you would understand the futility of this. It's called gang bang mentality. An endless tit for tat that gets worse & worse with each generation. Even if there are divisions in the Gang like in Iran, by bombing them you will only unite them against us PERMENANTLY. People forget that Iranians see themselves as Persian first. They have an existing solid identity that goes back thousands of years. Nations have been invading them forever & they have always prevailed. These people make Iraqi or US nationality look like preschool class. They will not only endlessly fight us recall waves of humans against Sadams army in the Iran Iraq war but the world powers we have tenuous relationships with currently will align with Iran. We will be falling into a slow & endless abyss that will in the end completely destroy our country & pull the world into a stupid world war.
This is what your lack of obviously human understanding will unleash with that rather ignorant belief system. Regretfully Bush/Cheney believe it as well & are trying to make it happen.

Now that's a more interesting & thought out perspective. That I can believe to be a real possibility. Interesting.
