Default Iraq Signs Oil Deal With China Worth Up to $3 Billion

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/08/29/wo...html?ref=world - Whole story

Quote:
BAGHDAD — In the first major oil deal Iraq has made with a foreign country since 2003, the Iraqi government and the China National Petroleum Corporation have signed a contract in Beijing that could be worth up to $3 billion, Iraqi officials said Thursday.

He said that Iraq had agreed to provide security for Chinese workers and that the Chinese company would also bring its own security team.

The 22-year contract is a renegotiated version of a 1997 agreement between China and Iraq under Saddam Hussein. The original contract included production-sharing rights, but under the new contract China will be paid for its services but will not share in profits.

The oil produced from the Ahdab field will help Iraq, a nation where electricity is in short supply, fuel a planned power plant that would be one of the largest in the country.

For China, the deal offers a lucrative foothold in one of the most oil-rich countries in the world.

“There are some political profits for China,” said Ibrahim Bahr al-Ulum, a former Iraqi oil minister. “They need access to Iraq, and when they need oil, at least the Iraqi people will feel that China has done something for them.”

No, "wow", Iraq is not the problem here, in fact it never was the problem.

Instead of "nuking Iraq", we might think about impeaching > arresting > trying > imprisoning and/or executing Bush / Cheney / Rumsfield / Rice / Scotter / et al. ...pjwky

The United States Embassy in Baghdad had no immediate comment on the oil deal.
They're supposedly sovereign. The NYT is always prodding us, slowly.

Hmmmm.. I thought they... we... paid that price for FREEDOM and to DEFEND AGAINST EVIL... oh and, BECAUSE IRAQ WAS A THREAT to the US security. How many times do the neocons have to tell you, it wasn't about oil.

Now that you're being bent over the pump and paying for petrol through your ass... suddenly you want oil and are holding our troops up as effigies of oil consumption?

What a fine patriot you are.

Stunning in it's revelation, isn't it? Truths rears their ugly partisan manipulative head.

-to the article-
You beat me, I saw this article last night. What I don't understand is why we continue to drop so much money there when they are in surplus, are now open to free markets & have asked repeatedly for us to leave. It's beyond all common sense & reality at this point.
