The obvious danger just from the Iranian governments
diplomatic ( that is: rhetoric and conceptual perspectives) positions
makes them the very danger of WWII..
A State .. an official sovereign society ( independent economically and culturally) that ACTS in purposeful conflict with other or dominant States..
( the essence of international War, right?)...
This eras wars are NOT the identical strategy and tactics of WWII,
(warcraft has undergone some technological upgrades, after all )
and the REAL religious base of THIS xenophobic nationalism makes for a far graver threat than the Hitler/Stalinist ones..
( the allegiance with euro-philosophers made
social-collectivism possible in the US)
Iranian ambitions are extremely aggressive.. and ARE explicitly attacking western ( inevitably, US ) influences to make a global league of "relatively" legalitic secular democracies..
The world-view..and the resultant policies.. of these reactionary provincial
fundamentalists are an understandable perspective of "back-to-god"/"luddite"/
tribal types who are desperate as they pass into history..
But the social mutation from access to european technologies and ideologies, specifically Stalinism and Nazism, as well as the "liberation theology" of a nascent "wahabist" sect has given them far more "assymetrical" influence than they should.
Thus, when the US CUT AND RAN from Iran in the 70's..
WE betrayed the persian republic.. The people who were trying to live..
in whatever freedom they could carve out of the region..
Jimmy Carter undertook a policy of US withdrawal, appeasement,
and Intel-blinding that is STILL being felt in our nation.
