Nathan Bedford Forrest was not a founder of the KKK.
Some of the founders used his name as a recruiting tool, but there is no evidence that they had his support.
NBF probably should have denounced them for doing this, and he deserves some criticism for this. However to his credit when the KK turned violent a year later he did immediately and publicly denounce them.
NBF deserves a little more respect then both sides attribute to him. He was a hard and violent man, but given his childhood and times, he acquitted himself fairly well.
