sink or swim
'sink or swim'. Is it expression in use?
I need an English equivalent of our proverb which means that a person should help himself/herself, not count on others. How it can be said?

Hey Al...
We don't really use that many proverbs here in the US....
Usually its more like "hey you lazy fuck, get a job!"
Sorry, but we aren't very civilized yet.

"God helps those who help themselves" is better for that.
"Sink or swim" is more either do it or don't do it, it really isn't related to not receiving help from others.

Hi Heckler,
it is because you think too much about money : ) why your fucking government doesn’t sell oil or something and give the money to Americans?

"Shit,,,or get off the Toilet",--- "Raise,,,or Fold", ---"If you want to eat,,, skin it and clean it"....
And yes Al,,,'sink or swim' is still used in Navy Boot Camps. They won't go in after you until the bubbles stop coming up....
Take care.

Cowboy Up!
I hear it all the time living in Oklahoma but I never use it myself. Although, it fits perfectly for what you wanted. It basically means to: *Focus on what to do and then attack it to completion*
