When my grandma died in 89 , we figured out she had been renting her old rotary phone for like 19 years from the phone company. I don't remember the exact math now, but at the time while I was helping to close out her affairs I did the math and she had paid like $320 for renting that phone.

I remember party lines, if you accidentally picked up the phone to use it , everybody thought you were a snoop.

AND......I remember the little old Lady who ran the switchboard down in Groveland Station too :-)

She was also the town clerk and I used to buy my hunting licenses from her.

BUT ANYWAY.....Grandmas phone was on the wall and the listen part was shaped like a bell and hung on a hook on the left side....and there was a hand crank on the otherside.......and there were no numbers to dial.....you had to have the switchboard lady hook you up to your party ......there was no 911 then either.

Back then I was a hitman on woodchucks.....mrs. Savino used to give me .50 cents for young tender ones....and Grampa Walt Magee would give me a qaurter for shooting them out of his cow pastures :-)
