SC Senate Passes Heavy Fines for Hiring an Illegal Immigrant

Columbia (AP) -- South Carolina employers could face fines up to $10,000 for each illegal immigrant they hire under legislation the state Senate has passed.

Quote:
’If you’re operating in bad faith, if you’re hiring illegals, this state will have an aggressive monitoring system and a penalty system. And the message will go out loud and clear that you’re going to abide by the laws in the state of South Carolina,’ the Charleston Republican said.
If the bill passes, the state Revenue Department would have to notify employers as early as July about new rules requiring them to verify their workers through a federal electronic system; a new paper-based system set up by the state; or with South Carolina-issued driver’s licenses and identification cards.

I'm skeptical of any new tough on illegals/tough on the employers of illegals laws that doesn't have MANDATORY e-verification of the legal status of an employee.

Skeptical, yes, but hopeful, and encouraged.
It took 20+ years to get us into this mess with 11 to 20 million (government #s) illegals. It may take some time to solve the problem.
DON'T LET THEM TELL YOU IT CAN'T BE DONE!!

Bingo! All these "get tough" bills include the phase "knowingly hire", when they should read "hire without verifying immigration status".

The law should require employers to check to see that they are legal.

What does the law say about Labor Unions recruiting illegal labor and Unions forcing employers to hire illegal Union workers?
What does the law say about fake IDs, fake driver's licenses, fake green cards and fake birth certificates?
Crackdown on these law violations and it will help employers comply with the labor laws.

All those thing are already against the law. E-verify will eliminate their use, if employers are required to use it.

You might want to rethink that part of your statement.

It sure would. A clearance by the local police in form of an ID that can be verified by telephone would go a long way.
