Default Modern day Upton Sinclair novel

Columns: It's just a penny a pound, people

This is an interesting op-ed piece by Robyn Blumner about the wages and conditions of tomato pickers in Florida. It highlights the exploitation that is happening in this industry although we can be certain the Florida Tomato Growers Exchange isn't the only perpetrator.

The greed of business and the blind eye of the government will allow this type of abuse to continue.

As exploited and misused as the tomato pickers are, it is still better than the conditions they left "back home".
But I still say its time to arrest and fine the employers of these, mostly illegal workers. If reporters can find these people, to write about, ICE can find them to arrest.

It is hard to imagine the conditions back home to be worse, but I'm sure that is true. The condition of these trailors with no air conditioning must be a real pleasure with 10 stinky men sleeping in them.

Let's face it, the gov't really has no interest in cracking down on this problem. I think the few examples you've seen in the news were just to quiet the angry taxpayers.

I wonder how much PAC money the "tomato pickers" have contributed and to whom?
