It depends on how you define illegal. There were no such things as passports and visa's then. If you arrived, and the ship cleared a health inspection, passengers were expected to take a loyalty oath, and pay taxes to the local authority.

My mothers family arrived in this country, in 1740, at the port of Philadelphia, after clearing British customs, and medical exams, they were allowed to proceed, and establish their homestead. So I guess they were considered legal residents. They became Americans after the Revolutionary War.

Prior to that, settlers arrived and were met by Native Americans, some were made welcome (guess they were legal) and some were met with hostility, and fighting(guess they were illegal). Now separating out the two might prove problematic, after all this time.

The immigrants of the 1600's as you said built this country. The majority of the new immigrants {illegal aliens} can't build anything besides a rap sheet. Left on their own in their respective countries they cannot build an economy let alone a vehicle, toaster, refrigerator etc. So they come here, and our government lets them in. The only industry that is thriving due to this influx in the PRISON system. But hey, on the bright side lettuce is sorta' cheap.......

Rob many natives gave amnesty to the europeans and look what happened. They started to fight back a little to late and look what happened. Where they illegal in the sense that they came and just took away land that already belonged to those that had owened it for thousands of years ya in a way I guess you could say they were illegal.
