I used heroin from 1968-1975. The main problems it causes can all be attributed to it's illegality. It's the government, the police and the court system that ruins lives.

    It used to be legal.

Turns out it's not safe at all.

But hey, load you up a big syringe of some puro and go at it.

Wow! Did you enjoy being "dope sick"? I used to work in a Men's Half Way House. It is not a pretty site...those guys ruined they're own lives by using Heroin. They burned all of their bridges with family and friends...that place was pretty much their last chance.

I would rather drugs like this be fought with education, rather than locking junkies up. I would rather they all be legal - here in the USA we supposedly have a free society, but it just ain't so.

Honestly, I'm not sure what we gain with it being illegal. Bitch and moan about people's lives being ruined all you want, keeping it illegal has yet to stop it from happening. Better education might.

I still see the same thing to this day. A lot of older men from Vietnam come through the VA, and many of them are still strung out on something. Whether it's drugs, booze, or both many of them now have to have a sitter, or they're so sick they don't even know where they are. And I never see anyone visit them, so that tells me their family and friends gave up on them a long time ago. Many also end up on the psych ward. It's more than sad to see the shape people let themselves get into. On one hand you feel sorry for them, but on another you feel like shaking some sense into them at the same time.

It is very sad to see so many that have ruined their lives from chasing an artificial high. I was fortunate to not have to see them detox, we would not take them until they were in better shape both physically and emotionally.

You really can't blame their family and friends for just giving up on them. Some of the stories I heard about their antics while high were awful. On e guy managed to clean out his elderly grandmothers bank account, her entire life's savings. I could go on and one with stories like that. On one hand I felt very bad for them, but you're right, with the other hand I wanted to smack them.
