Default National guards C-130 cargo planes not outfitted.

The National Guard's C-130 cargo planes, among the most powerful aerial firefighting weapons, never were slated to help. The reason: They've yet to be outfitted with tanks needed to carry thousands of gallons of fire retardant, though that was promised four years ago.

"The weight of bureaucracy kept these planes from flying, not the heavy winds," Republican U.S. Rep. Dana Rohrabacher told The Associated Press. "When you look at what's happened, it's disgusting, inexcusable foot-dragging that's put tens of thousands of people in danger."

C-130's are not the best way to fight fires. They have a good payload, but must be brought back to a airstrip, landed, and the tanks refilled with hoses, before they take off.
Time wise a CH-53 with dump buckets can deliver MORE water on a fire in a shorter time. They are also cheaper to operate.

We are in a time of scarce resources . The majority of effort and equipment is in the war theaters .

States are going to have to take matters into their own hands to equip their own national guards.

Or If I was governor of a state I'd be starting my own force, why not the government is using mercenaries .

Something like the State Defense Core . Charter it so that the Feds cannot direct or get their hands on this group and then keep them , and their equipment home to defend the State where they belong from any and all threats including our federal government.

But least the government thinks they can walk over us because we lack troops in the states right now , the insurgency they will face when they try will surprise them. As patriots we will be willing to fight for our land and communities .

They think they are facing insurgents who mean business in iraq , wait till they try to declare marshall law here. The insurgency that will swell up in the US will make Iraq look like child's play.

Who trains the Natonal Guard, I wonder if you even know. Yes the National Guard is primarily used for the states in times of disaster but if the DOD needs them, they have to go.

There are 2000 California National Guardsman in Iraq. There are 16,000 in California now. Is that what you call "scarce?"

Peach, because you don't agree with the war in Iraq, you will do anything to hurt our fighting ability. Are you neighbors of John Kerry?

My Uncle is just visted from Missouri, Depuity Sec of Aagriculture in the Reaten and Bush admins. Hes a current missouri state legislator. Hes a very conservative minded guy. Hes intilegent for the most part. Anyway he an get almost fanatic. Even he disagrees with any use of the national guard overseas. I havent found many people in the know that dont. It wasnt supposed to be. Its a burden on the states and a waste of life. Now wasted life at home again...as well as abroad. Partisan idiocy will cloud any resolution to a problem that has nothing to do with partisan politcs. What a shame.

Thos old relics dont have any place in or assistance to any overseas war anymore. I dont care what the do to the airframe. They are way to old to be used. Fire assistance is a perfect job for these tired old birds.

it's the Louisianan levee situation redesigned ...

These planes may not be totally effective - but would have been a LOT better than nothing accomplished in the four years!

The problem here is that their fantasies of 10,000 body bags did not come true.

Din't come true in the Gulf War, neither...which has them still mad from then.

But the fact that we have won in Iraq is REALLY pissing them off, now!

Stop reminding them.
