I do remember some of this stuff from history classes.

Lee was friends with US Grant. They would have little parties during the civil war and send each other personal messages.
A top graduate of West Point, Lee distinguished himself as an exceptional soldier in the U.S. Army for thirty-two years, during which time he fought in the Mexican-American War.

This makes the civil war seem like a bad joke on both sides.

This is not correct. They were not friends. They had met in the Mexican war and Grant remembered Lee but Lee did not remember Grant. Their meeting at Appomatox was between two strangers

Not surprising, Lee was the golden boy, Grant the exact opposite. Amazing how similar yet totally different their lives were.

Pickett was a great general, too. I wish the South had more generals who were willing to march their men into hopelessly overwhelming cannon fire. The South would be a better place today.
