All kidding aside some disturbing parallels may be drawn,as I begin to study Roman and American history together. Caligula and Clinton being soul mates of sorts, do not top the list. I don't speak or read or write in any Romance Languages. My first Language is English and I am in the process of learning how to read German and Breton. Funny enough I waited till my early 20s to even take interest in learning how to read other languages. Better late than never I guess.

Also, there is countless competing theories on what lead to the collapse. My belief is that it was 2 parts economic, 1 part religious/cultural and 1 part military.

I think it was a cause and not an effect. In other words, I think they began relying upon barbarian armies because their military was failing.

I don't know about civilized, but the army used to be a path towards gaining land and making some money via plunder whereas it wasn't any more.
