If discussing American Generals I would pick Lee. He influenced US strategy more than any other general on the top of my head.

Actually this has been a great & informative thread & Nate you have added to my knowledge. That to me is a good thing. I understand historical context & I leave it there. What little I've gathered over the years has made me greatly appreciate the complexity of the civil war on many levels.

Poltical viewpoints aside The CSA had many fine Generals. Leadership in General in the south was better then North. Same with the Germans in the second world war. They were better then there allied counterparts. Patton freely admitted learing from Rommel. There is no shame in that. If ego and pride prevents you from learning from an enemy you will be the weaker in the long run. Its not inferiority, its inteligence to recognize this in an enemy.
