I think that ADHD is diagonsed more than it ever has been in the past. I also think parents prefer to medicate their children rather than be a parent and deal with the child.

Dealing with ADHD is a very hard thing. My son was medicated for about 4 years, long enough for him to become proficient in reading and set good study habits. At the age of nine, he absolutely refused to take his meds, so we found a lot of other ways to deal with ADHD and I have to admit, some behaviors I had to learn to ignore. I had to fight with his neurologist because he wanted to overmedicate him. I did not want a zombie child.

My kids have had friends on meds for ADHD. Their mothers would take them off of it for the weekend or vacations and their child will come to my house... they literally bounced off the walls without their meds. Yes, behavior modification can be done, but in the beginning to get a handle on the situation I think the meds are justifiable for true ADHD kids/adults.

That's part of the problem though. I think that it truly over-diagnosed. And I have a very hard time with adults being medicated for it. By the time you reach adulthood, you should have already learned to cope with it.
Behavior mod. and art therapy were my saviors. Most parents don't want to do behavior mod, because the whole family has to change behaviors. They see the child as the problem. I think that's why meds are so often used.
It is funny about the bouncing off the walls. Been there, done that and it was exhausting.

My grandson was diagnosed by teachers and then convinced his mother to medicate him. The whole problem was that he just needed to get into atheletic activities to work off the energy and then he could focus on his studies and home life.

Physical activites is a very good redirection for all children. My son does very well in football and weightlifting. It taught him discipline. He had a wonderful coach when he was in the 7th grade that would run the track with him so he wouldn't get side tracked.

Lady, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to highjack your thread. I don't know much about autism, but from what I understand there are varying degrees. In the highest degree, those children can't even be reached. I think that would be very hard to deal with. One of the greatest things we give our children is love, and for a child not to be able to receive that love.....
As you know, I am not a big fan of vaccinations.

My eldest grandson was diagnosed as autistic because he couldn't talk. We later found out he could, just wouldn't. Long story. He is perfectly ok today, and serving in the military. Has a very high IQ. I don't know what autism is.
