OK, let me try to be more specific. There were many scenerios that were given (in these classes) and one of the big ones was the Terri Schaivo case. More than half of the people in the class (all much younger, in thier 20s) had very 'this is the way it is' based on religious belief/views regardless of the situation or complications of the patient and family. These are not easy decisions to make and I understand why my GF literally makes a third more money than I do. I hear about absolute nightmare scenerios that these people in healthcare administration have to deal with and the problems come at you from all angles; experience helps a lot along with being very humane.

Two quick comments on this thread. The first I think the young women if competent and meets all criteria should be eligible to be on the waiting list for a kidney.

The study from The Ohio State University would be a good starting point for her case.

Another factor in this thread was the discussion of medicaid. I will be direct. If I had a daughter on medicaid I would not reside in Oklahoma. No offense! Oklahoma is probably a great state however medicaid is both a federal and state funded program . I would carefully study each state and how the medical community handles medicaid patients. The best of care or the worst if relying on medicaid will be directly related to your state and if the medical community shares the burden of medicaid patients(they cost physicians money to see them... the reimbursement is so low). A compassionate and reasonalble medical community will spread the caseload as opposed to "a clinic" that sees medicaid patients with rotating staff.

Oh and choose your hospital very carefully...
