Recently in New Orleans after the hurricane, national guard troops and police went house to house taking peoples guns in the name of martial law.

In the event of a terror attack and a declaration of martial law you can be sure some demi god will get the same idea and declare all guns must be confiscated for the good of the people .

New york keeps guns out of the hands of law abiding citizens in some misguided theory of crime reduction .

The possibility of a natural disaster , terror event or any other excuse they can come up with causing a declaration of martial law is plausible and growing more probable all the time . Confiscation of law abiding citizens weapons is all the government would ever be able to accomplish , but that does not mean they aren't stupid enough to try it.

.... Actually, I believe that National Guard troops were not involved in the actual confiscation of privately owned firearms, only the New Orleans police were. Further, the NRA successfully sued Mayor Ray Nagin and his Police Chief for violation of the II Amendment rights of the citizens. When Nagin refused to obey the court orders, he was cited for contempt as was the Chiief of Police who summarily retired. Now the guns are being returned to those who apply. Incidentally, the police didn't kick in doors indiscimrinately. They only went to the homes where the owners had followed the law and registered their firearms with the city. As a result, they were effectively disarmed and the street gang scum were not.

Furthermore, martial law was never declared. Had it been, the city would have been placed under command of a military governor. That never existed. Had a military governor or commander been placed in such a position, street gangs that roamed the streets would have been shot on sight
and the local police would have been stripped of authority. The National Guard troops -- who incidentally -- came from other states because much of the 256th Louisiana had been deployed to Iraq, were there to support the city and state government with logistics and supplies, not to serve as substitute police.
