Yes, tens of thousands received this letter and about 18,000 actually signed it. I really had no opinion at the time-I could have signed something I knew nothing about-I chose not to do this. Do you think the 17,000 "scientists" they claim to have signed that refute global warming are qualified- if I received the letter? They did not even request a verification of any degree or background. I still have the letter and kept it in a file-I did dig it up and stick it in an old frame last year and refiled it-I was not joking when I said this-after this group became such a controversial issue I wanted to show how The Oregon Petition found the scientists who refute global warming.
BTW-my husband received a second letter to sign in 2007.
Anyway, your belief in this has no bearing on the science-you can reference the qualifications and how they sent the letter and how many they sent and to whom-and you will see how meaningless this document actually is.

Dom here is a copy and paste from wikipedia on the Oregon Petition.
Case Study: The Oregon Petition
"The Oregon Petition, sponsored by the OISM, was circulated in April 1998 in a bulk mailing to tens of thousands of U.S. scientists." Wikipedia
You say you do not believe I was asked to sign this petition. My husband and I are both licensed and practice healthcare in Oregon and this letter came to each of us professionally. It was bulk mailed to tens of thousands of what they decided were scientists-which were really just anyone with science backgrounds.
I do not need to make up anything about myself-my point was the massive bulk mailing and lack of credibility of the Oregon Petition and sadly it was one of the primary documents used to refute global warming by the Bush administration. It was promoted as being signed by thousands of scientists. A science teacher, physician, weatherman, dentist or college professor that knew nothing of climate science could sign this and I still have the letter requesting my support and signature. Really this was a scandal missed by the national media.
This should have been covered in the media-how they came up with thousands of signatures and the ordinary citizens they bulk mailed to make their case against the worlds leading climate scientists.
