When one travels, its probably a good idea to think of it as an experience you can bring home, so your xenophobia while traveling probably did nothing to help the American cause. I, too, have been all over Europe and found myself quite capable of learning a thing or two.
Somethings that Europe has going for it...lets start with
France:
-The design of most of the cities is such that there is a residential area which opens out unto a park, from which point you go to work. As a result everyone in the town sees each other and knows each other. On a given block, I've only known maybe 15% of my neighbors. Being in Cannes, for example, in just one day I had already acquired a larger set of familiar faces eager to assist me with things like buying pot and meeting girls.
-Spain. I went to only one city in Spain, Barcelona. When I arrived it was a weekday, at around 3 in the morning. The city streets were filled with kids (thousands) my own age smoking pot, high on ecstasy, drinking beers and having fun though all the shops and restaurants had already been closed. I spent the night sleeping in my car, which I parked near the beach. There I saw all the kids from that night setting up umbrellas and just casually falling asleep on the beach. When I woke, the party had only magnified, there were naked people in the streets, intermingled with tourists and locals. One night, around 2 in the morning here in LA, all my neighbors were outside their apartments looking over the balcony, some cops were arresting three Mexicans.
-Zürich, Switzerland. Despite being a party town, where one can find a rave and some drugs any time of night, the city itself is more tranquil and clean than a McDonald's bathroom. the ethnic diversity in the city is such that one can easily grab some American coffee and some dim sum for breakfast. I never saw a crack-head beg me for money, or a fight, or anything for that matter even remotely unlawful.
