Your assumption that the patriots where left leaning is a fallacy monolithic in nature... Our founders did not Declare there independence because of liberal ideals... in fact they where conservative/republican -ideals that still reign true today... Here is a short excerpt from wikipedia

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_revolution
The American Revolution included a series of broad intellectual and social shifts that occurred in the early American society, such as the new republican ideals that took hold in the American population. In some states, sharp political debates broke out over the role of democracy in government. The American shift to republicanism, as well as the gradually expanding democracy, caused an upheaval of the traditional social hierarchy, and created the ethic that formed the core of American political values.[1]

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Republi..._United_States
Republicanism is the political value system that has dominated American political thought since the American Revolution. It stresses liberty and rights as central values, makes the people as a whole sovereign, rejects aristocracy and inherited political power, expects citizens to be independent and calls on them to perform civic duties, and is strongly opposed to corruption. The American version of republicanism was formed by the Founding Fathers in the 18th century and was based on English models as well as Roman and European ideas. It formed the basis for the American Revolution, the Declaration of Independence (1776) and the Constitution (1787), as well as critical statements from Abraham Lincoln and others. It is not the same as democracy, for republicanism asserts that people have inalienable rights that cannot be voted away by a majority of voters; the two political philosophies have influenced but do not literally define their political party namesakes, the Democratic Party and the Republican Party. The republican ideal of civic duty was succinctly expressed in 1961 by the Democrat John F. Kennedy: "Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country."

In fact

The big one is Taxation without representation .... If it wasn't for those fat cat colonialist that where paying duties to the Queen in a abhorred fashion the revolution may have never happend. Because it is the BOSTON tea party that set off the events of the American revolution in 1773…….

So as I was saying your premise is 100% wrong….

Now as far as you and the word patriot.. I don’t find it suprising that you framed your argument around the definition of the word. This is a simple cop out and diversion of answering the question. We don’t care what your definition of the word patriot it is… We care about the words meaning.. .And by the look of your posts and the definition of the word patriot via the Webster dictionary….

You're asking I.H.N.R. that question G/D? You might as well add N.O.Y.B. into the mix...And don't turn your back to them.

Frankly, my rightwing friends, with all the bitching you've done over the last 250 years, I'd say YOU are the ones who hate America. True or False?

"Your assumption that the patriots where left leaning is a fallacy monolithic in nature..."

>>>I didn't say anything about them being left leaning. But now that you mention it, they were LIBERAL (hence the term 'liberal democracy') and PROGRESSIVE. And Republicans were, are now, and forever will be - TORIES.

Oh, and gix.... I think who ever wrote that wiki essay was confusing the republican (small "r") form of government with Republican (big "R") ideology. It is a well known fact that once the republican form of government was chosen, those that had lobbied for a democratic government immediately chose to call themselves Republicans. Leaving the folks who truly held the republican beliefs to have to choose another name for themselves. The newly self appointed "Republicans" actually suggested that their opponents call themselves the Anti-Republicans.

As you can guess, this was an even worse choice than going with the second closest thing to what the actually were... Democrats...

Again, not to be confused with democracy (little "d").

So much for the folks at Wiki that fact check and review the articles being posted.

And now poor gix has been misled once again by someone else's interpretation instead of reading what happened from the folks that were there.
