YES, English is the language of the land.

YES! This very much needs to be done, it would move us towards be better consolidated as a country, even many 'liberals' side with this.

Yeah, it's funny how the American government finds it hard to make a decision on this matter. In Mexico, spanish is the official language, in Africa, each state has their own indigenous languages, in Europe each country and the European Union have their own indigenous languages. Yet, in America, our government, which is made up of Harvard, Yale, Brown, Princeton, and other top ivy league college graduates, can't make a simple decision-that is obvious mind you-to make english the official language of America.

I know one thing, I'm tired of having to press "1" on the telephone if I want the operator recording to speak in english-instead of spanish. It's no wonder the Mexican's just arrogantly cross our southern borders illegally-after all, spanish is the dominant language if you want to use an American telephone-so why wouldn't these illegal Mexicans think that America is their country.

No, there is no need for an official language. Some immigrants coming here need help while transitioning to English, nothing wrong with helping them.

Good thread Rob- English should be the national language, but not the official language.US citizens should be required to speak English ,but the legal ramiications are too great to move from a national language to an offical language. I like having an educated progressive country where we are actively engaged with the world and can print signs in hosptals, airports and government documents in other languages.

We need to be encouraging more language training in our country. We have too few of our people in this country that can understand second languages. This is the 21st century. This is a global economy. We need to encourage more diversity in that. After 9/11 we could not find enough students trained in Arabic
.
We ought to be encouraging more multi lingualism in this country and not talking about how we have one official language in our nation. That’s not helping our country.English should be the national language and being multi lingual should be encouraged so that America is educated and more competitive in a global society. We need to build bridges and by making English our national language we are an open society with the legal ability to have multi lingual communication.

The sharing of science, medicine, technology and security is enhanced with multi lingual Americans. I want American economy and education to grow not be further stifled and legally lmited. In fact I think the language requirements at our nations schools are too low and Americans are becoming less competitive and less educated.

You think that's annoying... hell, one of the banks I use has an ATM that you have to press a button to select the language in which to transact business. The selections are Russian, Tagalog, Spanish, English, Mandarin and French. GD, I live in the United States!!!!!!! Sure San Diego is aka Upper Tijuana but its still the US of A!

Maybe we should make Spanish the official language?
