A good friend married a French woman and they live here in Texas. Mrs. M. pays small premiums for her health insurance which is, of course, based in France and they pay her American hospital bills, etc. from the first dollar. Now, that's the way to go. Get French insurance and use it at the world famous Texas Medical Center. She was even able to add her American husband and their child to her policy for nickles.

Subsidized insurance ? I am sure the French taxpayer is taking in the shorts on that deal . Just think of what the bumblebutts in Washington would do with that. Those idiots would extend benefits to Mongolian gay nazi nuns and their cousins if they thought they would pick up a couple of votes . They are buying votes with our money and it infuriates as well as scare me . If they get hold of our health care , I and many others will be screwed . My treatment will cost big bucks covered by my insurance for which I have been paying around 6k per year for many years . I would not go NEAR the VA with this and thank GOD I have had insurance for when I needed it . I saw the way the VA tried to treat my grandfather and I will never forget it . It was a good thing I went with him to that dump so I could see the welfare to work plan in action .Again , no thanks . I do not blame the doctors and nursing staff , most are outstanding . I blame the legion of morons that run the place . I will keep my private insurance until they chuck me in the clay .

The problem with our healthcare and health insurance is the same basic problem we have with everything else in this country: WE HAVE TOO MANY LAWYERS. No, it isn't the fault of the doctors or nurses. WE HAVE TOO MANY LAWYERS. Anybody miss that?

rdnor, yes I am sure the French taxpayers are footing the bill on this even though Mrs. M. is from a well off family. It's French National insurance and you have be a French citizen or be married to one to qualify for it. It does surprise me, however, that they will pay for services rendered in the US. It was her choice to have her baby in the U.S. When I asked her if she would be going home to give birth, she gave me a look that said I had two heads and said, "Are you joking? Have my baby in a French hospital? No way."

No- I have lived and worked in the French system. Office visits are paid in full by the patient and they are reimbused 70% of the cost within 10 days.
Frencn healthcare is the best in the world , but I am not advocating socialized medicine for the US.The French are healthier and different type of consumers so their system would not work as well in the US.Besides their cardiologists probably are paid the equivalent 200,000/year US $. Cardiologists in the US make between 600,000 and 800,000/year. I do believe in a Universal Healthcare payment system.
A team of local cardiologists just returned from France where they learned the latest techniques in coronary ablations for arrythmias. The hospital where I work is in the top 100 cardiac hospitals in the US and most of the cardiologists go to France for the newest procedures.
Their system works for them , but is not the right fit for the US.

I want my doctors to be very satisfied with their pay . Especially a cardiologist . The French are a healthy lot , when I was there they smoked like chimneys and drank a lot . Go figure . Less stress I suppose .

Read a medical article once related to atherosclerosis which said, "The French are the healthiest people in the world. You couldn't clog a French artery if you injected the plaque directly." I think it's the wine......and their attitude.
French attitude: A French friend told me once, "American women are such liars. When you ask an American woman how she's doing, she will invariably respond 'fine' or 'pretty good.' Ask a French woman and she will tell you. She will tell you how she feels, how her husband is behaving or misbehaving and the flaws of her children. There's none of that 'pretty good' stuff with a French woman."

PLUS, they eat smaller portioned meals more often a day and take time with them. There's none of that stuff it and run stuff.
