On this one I don't stand with General Peters. On a highly sensitive issue like everyone should refrain from making judgments until the FULL facts are out.

If it turns out there is no basis that this guy is not a deserter, then this will be pretty cruel on this soldier and his family.

I looked up Lt Col Peters and his bio is pretty unimpressive. It looked like he didn't have any combat experience and only made Lt Col with 22 years in service. He was probably forced to retire because he hadn't got promoted. His babble sounds like someone's impression after watching a war movie.
