In Vietnam, two of the guys in my outfit deserted when they got orders to go home. They had girlfriends in a nearby village that they apparently didn't want to leave. I had dropped them off in the village a couple times and they would stay for a few days at a time.

About 3 days after their DEROS, a civilian came to find them. He said they never reported for rotation back to the states. They didn't tell anybody anything, but a bunch of equipment was missing after they left and I figured they had stocked up.

As far as I know, they stayed through the end of the war (ceasefire was in 6 months) or maybe got killed, who knows. In any case, they were never a threat to the USA.

For whatever reason soldier wandered, walked out of the perimeter.Not something normaly done in a combat zone.Seems strange he wandered into enemy hands. Sounds a little abnormal.
