Lee had his chance to command the North but chose treason instead!
Grant was out numbered at Vicksburg, had no base, put still won, check all of Grant career not just what happened to beat Lee!

"I just finished reading an article in the magazine Foreign Policy titled "Who Killed Iraq?" In a nutshell, it explains how Paul Bremer seemingly and completely trumped his military advisors stationed in Iraq (even though they clearly had a better understanding of events on the ground than he did). Makes for really good reading; I suggest you all check it out of you can."

>>>Bremer made the announcement that Iraq was to be 'de-Baathified', but I think the idea belonged to Wolfowitz and Rumsfeld, with Bush saying "da, yeah, I'll go along wi' dat". Whoever made the decision, it will go down in the pantheon of huge Bush Administration/Neocon fuck-ups.

What is not true - that Davis dressed up as a woman to flee Richmond?

I think Lee had a choice to make - either be treasonous to the USA or be treasonous to Virginia. In those days, states might have meant more to people than country.

Grant outnumbered the Confederates at Vicksburg by two to one, and in the beginning of the entire Vicksburg Campaign his Army of the Tennessee still outnumbered the Confederates. With the reinforcements he had close to 75K troops by mid summer and the Confederates couldn't field half that many, so this outnumbered stuff is way off. Check out the amount of casualties that Grant suffers even when he badly outnumbers his opponents. Since he had so many more men he did not hesitate to use the attrition tactic.

Secondly, Lee was not at Vicksburg so he certainly didn't beat him there. Grant threw bodies at opposing armies. He fought a war of attrition, plain and simple. Lee could not afford to do that as he did not have the same amount of resources as the North did.

I say if the roles were reversed and Grant commands the South and Lee commands the North then the war is over much quicker. The North could produce their own munitions and had 2.5 to 3 times as many troops. The South had to rely on exports from Europe for some of the munitions they needed. The North had numerous advantages and that allowed Grant and the North to win. Not his generalship.

And if you want to look at the character of the two men, that should be easy. Compare how Lee treated the civilians in Pennsylvania to how Grant and Sherman treat the civilians in the South. These are American civilians we are talking about!
