The first gun control laws in Cambodia were enacted on January 27, 1920
Other Royal Ordinances followed, eventually banning the possession of all "offensive steel weapons, or concealable steel weapons." When the French withdrew from Indo-China in 1954, they left behind this deadly legacy. Cambodia's monarchy, who had ruled before the French intervention in 1864, was restored to power. Then, in 1975, the Cambodian Communist Party, better known as the Khmer Rouge, won a short, bloody civil war with the aid of the North Vietnamese. Under the leadership of Pol Pot, the Khmer Rouge set out to destroy every trace of Cambodia's former society and regime. Everything left from the monarchy, human and material, was eliminated. Books, schools, churches and temples were burned; teachers, soldiers, civil servants, leaders, the wealthy and educated were exterminated. The few Cambodians who lawfully owned firearms were known to the authorities because they had to obtain permits. Most of those firearm owners were of the elite class; the very ones the Khmer Rouge were determined to exterminate. Because the greatest majority of the populace was left defenseless due to "sensible" gun control, too few were armed to oppose the Khmer Rouge. The result was the slaughter of over 1 million men, women, and children who those in power decreed were undesirables.*

OK, a reasonable assessment of some of this, thank you for going through it...now some questions?

First, the Khmer Rouge was not communist (totalitarian Nihilists to be very exact): but they did fight a civil war against the communist faction that had entered and influenced from Laos and Vietnam; the remaining people who did not take sides and were with Sihanouk were in big trouble. And, with all that the communist factions in all of Indochina are much more nationalistic than anything (that is actually where the problems started that the west really screwed up on, and that is the 'legacy' the the stupid French of that era had left behind post 1954 after Điện Biên Phủ fell in Northern Vietnam).

In the evolution of civliizations, in what a Joseph Campbell might suggest...(I do believe in that his theory). Was all of Indochina not faced with issues more having to do with lack of education, lack of cultural development, archaic monarchies, and dependence on rural economics? Regardless of private weapons in the hands of the individuals or not the Khmer Rouge was going to take Cambodia down, the country had been absolutley destroyed by a combination of Nixon's illegal/lethel bombing campaign to the east of Phnom Penh, the infiltration of communists from the Ho Chi Men trail in Cambodia along the boarder with Vietnam, and people like Pol Pot coming to power because of terrible alliances Prince Sihanouk allowed (he was desperate man that tried to stay neutral and protect the sovereignty of Cambodia).

You are talking about antiquated Frencn imperialistic law from 1920 and trying to further apply it to the problems later. Well, if you were an imperialistic power of 19th century thinking would you not takes away all ares from the 'slave labor' to stop any uprisings? Those laws are basically all the region knew and the French educated 'elite' were overseeing a poplace that was VERY poorly educated. I am having a hard time seeing the downfall of any part of Indochina as a result of the populace not being armed due to gun control. There a far too many mitigating circumstances that supercede that premise.

Here is the wildcard...

Thailand is right there and should have fallen too...why did it not?
