Harry Reid Tells Bush: War is ‘Lost’
    by Anne Flaherty
WASHINGTON - Senate majority leader Harry Reid said yesterday that the war in Iraq is ‘‘lost,” triggering an angry backlash from Republicans who said the top Democrat had turned his back on the troops. The bleak assessment, the sharpest yet from Reid, came as the House voted 215 to 199 to uphold leglislation ordering troops out of Iraq next year. Reid said he told Bush on Wednesday that he thought the war could not be won through military force, but only through political, economic, and diplomatic means.

‘‘I believe myself that the secretary of state, secretary of defense, and - you have to make your own decisions as to what the president knows - [know] this war is lost and the surge is not accomplishing anything as indicated by the extreme violence in Iraq yesterday,” said Reid, a Nevada Democrat.

Republicans pounced on the comment as evidence, they said, that Democrats do not support the troops.

‘‘I can’t begin to imagine how our troops in the field, who are risking their lives every day, are going to react when they get back to base and hear that the Democrat leader of the United States Senate has declared the war is lost,” said Senate GOP leader Mitch McConnell, Republican of Kentucky.

Last month, the House passed legislation that funded the war in Iraq but ordered combat missions to end by September 2008. The Senate passed similar legislation that would set a nonbinding goal of bringing combat troops home by March 31, 2008.

Bush said he would veto either measure, and warned that troops are being harmed by Congress’s failure to deliver the funds quickly.

Meanwhile, the Pentagon says it has enough money to pay for the Iraq war through June. The Army is taking ‘‘prudent measures” to slow the purchase of nonessential supplies and restrict other elective spending while still maintaining troop readiness, according to instructions sent to Army commanders and budget officials April 14.
Refute this by showing us sources that show our successes in Iraq from 2003 to now...how about it.....include in those sources all the care given to the US vets of this illegal occupation.

How about impeaching for torture? | AfterDowningStreet.org

From Abu Ghraib to Guantanamo to extraordinary renditions, Mr. Bush and Co. have violated our own laws and international treaties that flatly prohibit torture of war prisoners. Yet, they keep trying to excuse their abhorrent behavior by writing secret memos to themselves redefining torture, as well as not torture.

Two more of these self-excusing memos have recently surfaced from the misnamed Justice Department. Responding in 2005 to a new law passed by Congress, and to Supreme Court decisions prohibiting "Cruel, inhuman, and degrading treatment" of prisoners, Bush-appointed lawyers wrote a clandestine memo merrily defining CIA torture techniques as not being cruel, inhumane, and degrading. The revelation of this crude attempt to circumvent the laws of our land were so explosive that Mr. Bush himself had to be trotted out in a hastily arranged press appearance to declare with a straight face: "This government does not torture people."

Myth: The violence in Iraq has not gone down
As of 11/29/2007 the violence in Iraq has gone down considerably. It’s just that the main stream news media doesn’t report it. It’s funny to hear the senate majority leader saying that the war is lost a few months before Al-Qaeda is rejected from the Anbar Provence and the violence in Iraq drops 70-80%. The news of this reduction in violence is encouraging and it proves that we are making a difference in Iraq. Any one who denies this reduction in violence is showing how partisan they really are. Now democrats need to find something else to complain about like political reconciliation or Turkey’s actions in WWII. I can’t wait until this conflict is over and history shows that those who doubted the U.S. military’s capability to bring freedom to an oppressed people will be proven wrong once and for all!

Here are a few examples of the reduction in violence.

Myth: Iraq’s economy and infrastructure is getting worse

Despite terrorist attacks and sabotage Iraq’s economy has grown much faster than post war Germany and Japan.

    1) The Iraqi unemployment rate is at 25-40%. That’s down from 50-60% back in 2003.
    2) The electricity production level is 15% above pre war levels and the goal set by the US for average electricity generated has been reached years ago.
    3) 8,997,000 more people have phone service than before the war.
    4) Before the war there were no commercial TV stations, no commercial radio stations, and no independent news papers or magazines. Now there are 54 commercial TV stations 114 commercial radio stations and, 268 independent newspapers and magazines.
    5) There are 5.7% more children in elementary school since pre war levels and there is an 27% increase of children in middle/high schools since before the war.
    6) People with access to potable water before the war was 12.9 million but now 9.7 million with an 4.2 million increase since the war started. 6.2 million people had sewage before the war as opposed to the 5.6 million that have it now. However the CPA’s goal was 2.5 million.
    7) Iraq has managed to make 21 billion dollars in Oil revenues despite the insurgent sabotages and the number will only rise each year.
    8) Iraq’s GDP has more than doubled its growth since prewar levels making Iraq the fastest growing economy in the world.
    9) Crime/Violence in Iraq has dropped 70-80%.

    Iraq Veterans Against the War

Argue against this, Smitty..something BUSH has done in VIOLATION of our constitution..this is NOT about allegations against Hussein Bush used to invade Iraq..this is about Bush's violations of OUR laws in doing so....you on the same page, sport?

I joined the military after September 11th, 2001 out of a desire to protect our country. I believed the President and his cabinet members when they claimed that Saddam Hussein posed a serious threat to the United States, and then was shocked to learn that Congress, the American public, and the international community had to one degree or another been deceived or frightened into supporting the March 2003 invasion of Iraq. After examining statements made by numerous journalists and public officials with firsthand information on these matters, I came to the conclusion that the Iraq war was not only irresponsible but illegal and immoral, and that it set an incredibly dangerous precedent in terms of international relations. It effectively sent the message that the United States government reserves the right to violate international law as it sees fit, whether or not a particular state or nonstate actor presents an immanent threat to its national security.

By invading and occupying Iraq without proper legal justification, the Bush administration has severely eroded the rule of law, creating a disincentive for other countries to adhere to the same rules the United States has broken. I firmly believe that the current diplomatic impasse between the U.S. and Iran can be partially attributed to this. What incentive does the Iranian government, surrounded on all sides by a hostile force and labeled part of an "axis of evil", have to cooperate with a country bound by no law but that which it arbitrarily decides is appropriate for a superpower to abide by? Similarly, the erosion of diplomatic relations between Russia and the United States is a further consequence of the Bush administration's disregard for laws governing international affairs. However imperfect and in need of improvement, these laws help prevent and mitigate conflict between nations and are critical to peace and stability in the world. We undermine them at our own peril.

Not only harming our relations with the international community, through deception and brazen disregard for the rule of law the Bush administration has done great harm to our democracy and must be held accountable by Congress if we wish to restore vitality to our political system. The disinformation campaign waged against Congress to secure its support for the invasion of Iraq was a clear violation of the Constitution, considering that Article 1 Section 8 grants to the Legislative, not the Executive Branch, the power to declare hostilities. In order for it to do so responsibly it naturally follows that it must be accurately and honestly informed through independent intelligence assessments, untainted by political interference. If this remains unchallenged, future Executives will push further until Congress serves merely to maintain the illusion of democratic representation.

What led me to openly dissent against the occupation of Iraq and call for the impeachment of the Vice President was not only the fact that we invaded on false premises, but that the invasion was also motivated by imperialist objectives. I believe that most Bush administration officials wanted a more representative government for the Iraqi people, but their overriding priority was and is de facto control over Iraq's energy resources. It may be justifiable to overthrow a government because it has suddenly cut off vital energy supplies to your country, but this was far from the case with Iraq. The rationale in this case was to put in place a more dependent, pliable government. So long as the Iraqi government remains dependent on American security forces and financing, American businessmen backed by State Department officials will retain a strong position from which to negotiate a controlling influence over Iraq's oil industry, and therefore its economy, and therefore its government. Iraq may retain the facade of national sovereignty but will be under the de facto control of the United States government via American multinational oil corporations and financial institutions, the International Monetary Fund in particular.

Not only is this supremely immoral and a betrayal of America's revolutionary principles, it is also highly unpragmatic and almost certain to fail. Such a weak and acquiescent Iraqi government will continue to be viewed by the Iraqi people as illegitimate. It is clear that as long as we remain in Iraq, attempting to prop up a corrupt and throroughly compromised government, assassinations, sectarian violence, and attacks against American troops will continue indefinitely. For these reasons I believe American forces should be withdrawn as soon as is practically possible.

It is not an easy thing for any military member to dissent against their own government, particularly in time of war. Yet we took an oath to defend the Constitution. Under our Consitution no one is above the law- not even the President. I believe it is our duty as citizens and as military members to speak out publicly, within the bounds of pertinent laws and regulations, against the grave abuses of power which have been committed by Bush administration officials in the name of security and freedom. Our government has had to make many difficult decisions since September 11th, 2001, in the effort to protect our country against an enemy which is deliberately using our laws and political system against us. Acknowledging this, it cannot be allowed to disregard the system of checks and balances established by our country's Founders in order to preserve democratic accountability. If the Constitution is not upheld in these challenging times we will not have security or liberty- only fear and terror.

Ultimately, if we want to see a peaceful conclusion to the "Global War on Terror", which is in fact a continuation of decades of covert wars, we must be willing as a nation to engage in some self-reflection. My sense of historical perspective after September 11th was a very simplistic one: we were attacked without provocation by a vicious enemy. What I have since come to understand is that reality is much more nuanced, and that this array of conflicts we are faced with in the Middle East has been festering for nearly 60 years as a consequence of short-sighted decision-making. It cannot be solely attributed to Muslim extremism- not when our country's foreign policies are criticized all over the world, including throughout much of South America and even among our closest allies in Europe. We must ask ourselves whether we wish to uphold our values of liberty and equality under the law, or to become the British empire and make a mockery of our own Declaration of Independence. It is often painful to reflect upon the past, but I profoundly believe it is necessary to the future of our democracy that we do so. We must begin to examine America through the eyes of others before we can begin to understand ourselves. As the revered ancient warrior Sun Tzu wrote, "Know thy enemy, know thyself. A thousand battles, a thousand victories."

The Iraq Index is a statistical compilation of economic, public opinion, and security data. This resource will provide updated information on various criteria, including crime, telephone and water service, troop fatalities, unemployment, Iraqi security forces, oil production, and coalition troop strength.

The index is designed to quantify the rebuilding efforts and offer an objective set of criteria for benchmarking performance. It is the first in-depth, non-partisan assessment of American efforts in Iraq, and is based primarily on U.S. government information. Although measurements of progress in any nation-building effort can never be reduced to purely quantitative data, a comprehensive compilation of such information can provide a clearer picture and contribute to a healthier and better informed debate.

Michael O'Hanlon spearheads the Iraq Index project at Brookings, with assistance from Research Assistant Jason H. Campbell. O'Hanlon is a Foreign Policy Studies senior fellow and served on a U.S. government delegation to Iraq to review post-war progress.
