After hearing this story, I thought about what occured and tried to put myself on one side of the fence or the other. Pretty tough;
On the one hand, if you rely on the Police these days you're sure to be disappointed with the results............and having the abilty/right to take care of your own (or neighbors) backyard, would seem like a logical deterent to criminals. Anybody that thinks that the risk of being gunned-down doesn't enter the minds of this group of people is pretty thick in the head.
On the other hand, is deadly force an appropriate response to some asshole running away with your Plasma T.V.? And if so, where are the boundries drawn concerning capital offences? Is there a different law on the home front as opposed to the laws we're normally expected to observe?
I can't imagine this scenario working very well these days, because the body bags would be stacked like cord-wood........ everybody would shoot their "dick-headed neighbor"

It's a tough one.
