The early Romans & the Spartans had somewhat of a similar approach. The early Romans elected 2 equal counsuls to lead for a given year; the terms were limited to 1 year: at the end of the year each one had to present a defense of all of their actions to the senate: if judged poorly, they were executed or exiled.

The Spartans chose one king that ruled for a 5 year limited term, at the end of his term he was called before a randomly selected group of elders to answer for his actions: again if found lacking, he was executed or exiled.

What these had in common was an "automatic review" of the leaders actions while in office, and very strict term limits. Its is interesting that in each society there was a huge attempt to make public officials aware of thier temporary hold on power; and that they would be held accountable for their actions while in office. [The Roman Legion's cry of, "Sic transit gloria mundi" to all incomming counsuls, was a verbal & public reminder of the temporary nature of their power.]
