A bug chaser is a gay man who deliberately attempts to contract HIV by having unprotected sex with a man or group of men who are known to have the virus.

A gift giver is an HIV positive gay man who deliberately transmits the virus, often times to bug chasers, or those willing to contract it.

What are bug parties?

Bug parties are sex parties often ranging from a few to as much as 30 people. Unsafe sex with every participant at the party is encouraged. There are several variations of bug parties. At some, there is one member of the "orgy" that is HIV positive. Only this individual and the host know his positive status. The remaining participants know that there is an infected person in the room, but do not know his identity. The participants then partake in a night usually filled with alcohol, drugs and of course unsafe sex.

In other variations of a bug party, there is one person who is not infected with HIV, however the other participants are or may be. Every one is aware of the person who disease free. The HIV negative person then allows the infected guys to have unprotected anal sex with him.

Why do people participate in bug parties?

Many psychologists theorize that participation in bug parties is actually an anxiety disorder where the non-infected individuals fear getting HIV so greatly that they would rather contract it and free themselves of the anxiety of living in fear. These parties are also seen as a sort of club for those living with HIV. Infecting a HIV negative and willing participant initiates them into their world. Some people also engage in unprotected anal sex (or barebacking) as the fear for AIDS dangerously dwindles.

"The Gift" from filmmaker Louise Hogarth is a documentary about gay men who purposely contract HIV. According to Rolling Stone, one character in the film admits "I was relieved. I didn't have to worry. Do I need to be careful -- not any more." Yet another willing 21-year-old regrets his choice. "I've made a terrible mistake and there's no fixing that. There is no benefit in this and that's what needs to be said."

HIV infection is on the rise among young men who have sex with men in New York City, according to preliminary data from the Health Department. New HIV diagnoses among MSM under age 30 have increased by 33% during the past six years, the agency reported today, from 374 in 2001 to almost 500 in 2006.

New diagnoses have doubled among MSM ages 13 to19, while declining by 22% among older MSM. The under-30 group now accounts for 44% of all new diagnoses among MSM in New York City, up from 31% in 2001.

To focus on more recent trends in HIV infection, this analysis excluded men who were diagnosed with HIV and AIDS at the same time, generally indicating that the infection has progressed for many years. In 2006, 20% of MSM diagnosed with HIV received a concurrent diagnosis of AIDS (285 men), meaning that they had missed opportunities for care to stay healthy and may have unknowingly spread HIV to others.

Within the next 25 years, AIDS is set to join heart disease and stroke as the top three causes of death worldwide, according to a study published Monday.

When global mortality projections were last calculated a decade ago, researchers had assumed the number of AIDS cases would be declining. Instead, it's on the rise.

Currently ranked fourth behind heart disease, stroke, and respiratory infections, AIDS is set to become No. 3, say researchers in a new report in the Public Library of Science's Medicine journal. It accounts for about 2.8 million deaths every year, but could near 120 million by 2030.

sexually transmitted diseases can be transmitted through any kind of sexual contact.

yes since LVG is transmitted most often through anal sex gay men are more at risk.
since the "passive" person is more at risk than their partner, females in heterosexual relationships are at a greater risk at catching an STD.
and its very difficult for STDs like HIV to be transmitted through female/female contact.


I get the majority of my facts about STDs from the CDC- which is nationwide, not just NYC. Women's Health professionals have seen more cases with females and sites devoted to females health have reports on this.
the CDC reports an increase in almost every group because people no longer fear HIV. it may not be a death sentence anymore but its still scary and people need to understand that.
its a new trend for people to feel comfortable having relations with someone who has an STD as long as they use protection. (I'm sure we've all seen the Genital Herpes commercials. "I have GH"... "and I don't")


personally- and I'm not a doctor- I'd predict that there will be a rise on the infection among young heterosexuals because
1- people like you tell them its a gay disease and they are safe
2-they think only drug addicts are at risk
3-they share needles when they pierce and tattoo one another
4-they think it won't kill them

I've personally viewed this behavior and have heard this reasoning- I'm not pulling ideas out of thin air.
