OLYMPIA, Wash. - An initiative filed by proponents of same-sex marriage would require heterosexual couples to have kids within three years or else have their marriage annulled.

Initiative 957 was filed by the Washington Defense of Marriage Alliance. That group was formed last summer after the state Supreme Court upheld Washington's ban on same-sex marriage.

Under the initiative, marriage would be limited to men and women who are able to have children. Couples would be required to prove they can have children in order to get a marriage license, and if they did not have children within three years, their marriage would be subject to annulment.

All other marriages would be defined as "unrecognized" and people in those marriages would be ineligible to receive any marriage benefits.

“For many years, social conservatives have claimed that marriage exists solely for the purpose of procreation ... The time has come for these conservatives to be dosed with their own medicine," said WA-DOMA organizer Gregory Gadow in a printed statement. “If same-sex couples should be barred from marriage because they can not have children together, it follows that all couples who cannot or will not have children together should equally be barred from marriage."

Supporters must gather more than 224,000 valid signatures by July 6 to put the initiative on the November ballot.

Opponents say the measure is another attack on traditional marriage, but supporters say the move is needed to have a discussion on the high court ruling.

My two cents:

I find it absurd that anyone thinks the Government has any place in marriage, whether your gay or straight. You have the extremes from both sides. Gays who want anti-gay speech banned, and Christian Fundamentalists who think it will lead to polygamist marriage or Animal Fucking...

This comes down to what Government actually thinks about marriage. To Government it is nothing more than Tax breaks, Social Programs, Property Rights, and a 10-50 dollar tax on getting married. So why on Earth would they wish to exclude there grubby little hands from Gay money?

Answer to that is distraction. Piddley bullshit that doesn't matter or even affect American's in there daily lives directly or indirectly, like gay marriage, the drug war, and so on, turn Americans into one-issue voters based on religious beliefs or social bigotries so they ignore the bigger issues. Such as the Patriot Act, that so easily swept into Congress and into law, or the North American Union treaty that Bush signed away our Sovereignty on, Federal I.D. Cards, and so on, where Americans do not know about or do not care because they rabble rouse about stupid shit that does not matter.

Ill end it here. Marriage is a religious institution. In America, we have a separation of Church and State, meaning Congress shall not favor one religious view over the other. There duty is to make sure there responsibility to this Nation are upheld and carried out.

Government has neither the right, or the authority to deny or acknowledge marriage to gays, or straights and even Polygamists. There job is upholding contracts, and custody of children when 50% or so of us get divorced because people think sex is love.

this is true. if marriage is about procreation you must have children and if you can't have kids- you can't marry.

since I don't think marriage is about kids I find this to be assinine.

there are two kinds of marriage- religiously based and recognized and secular marriages.
but contrary to public opinion not all gay marriages would be secular. some religions recognize gay marriage.

Common Law Marriages would fix this whole situation if you ask me. It would leave marriage to clergy and individuals, and not to Government. Which I think this whole argument would be solved if Government got out of our personal lives.

what would that do to our system of rights and priveleges for married couples? (in some states married couples have over 400 of these special things single persons don't).
even our insurance companies and similair bussinesses do special things for couples.

marriage helps society as well. married people tend to committ less crime and do things that help out the economy. (which is partly why couples get extra perks from the federal and state governments)
