Default Racism in Europe

Hello guys,

On June 15, 2006, the European Parliament adopted a resolution on the increase in racist and homophobic violence in Europe. The adoption of the document was a reaction to a rapid and worrying rise of anti-discriminatory, racist, anti-Semitic and xenophobic behavior in many European states.

Among the most worrying incidents that urged the European Parliament to adopt the resolution were:

- the ban made by Russian authorities on the march for equality and tolerance for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people (LGBT), which was planned to take place on May 27th in Moscow
- the murder of a black woman and the Belgian child whom she was babysitting by a young right-wing Belgian extremist, which previously also wounded a woman of Turkish origin
- The kidnapping, torture and murder of a Jewish man in February 2006 in France, by a gang of 22 criminals
- The ethnically motivated murder of Chaib Zehaf in March, 2006, in France.
- The torture and murder of a transsexual living in Portugal, in February 2006, by a group of adult and minor persons

Many other similar events also happened in Germany, France, Poland, Russia, Belgium and other states.

You can read about the rise of racist and xenophobic sentiments in Europe at EuropeanCourier.org

You can also read about it in the New York Times (edition of June 11, 2006) and in German “Der Spiegel” (current issue). There is also another good source, however strictly legal, and this is the website of the European Parliament, which contains resolutions and other documents on discrimination in Europe.

If you know other interesting sources and articles that you think are worth reading please share it with me either here or by contacting me directly via my e-mail info@europeancourier.org

Personaly, I think that Europe woke up too late. They have allowed immigration but failed to allow for assimulation into their different societies. I do hope that they will find a way to do something postive about the racism but I doubt if they will have the stomach to do it.

I agree that the European culture is older than the American way of life, but they willingly allowed immigration of people coming into their country. The fact is that these immigrates did not assimulate into the host nations society.

Europe has a serious issue with their immigrants. White Europeans entrenched in their society refuse to integrate newcomers. Some of these newcomers are Muslims especially in France and Britain. It's easy for Muslims in these isolated enclaves to become radicalized and come to hate Western culture for it supposed incompatibility with Islam.

Coug, how can you say that Islam is incompatible with Western Culture? Look at the Muslims in this country. They seem to be working and doing well here.

Not all countries in Europe have an open door policy to immigrants, and not all have great problems. The list of countries, quite rightly didn't include the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (God Save the Queen), because immigrants have settled in well. Britain (and much of Europe) doesn't have a major problem, there have been race problems, but the same one sees across the world.

When you live in a "isolated enclave" it probably is difficult to assimilate into a society. Who's fault is that?

How about people killing commuters on trains or trying to blow up planes?

I would call that a 'problem'.
