does anybody know about the current situation in Northern Ireland. I heard that some of the extreme remnants of the IRA are going back to the days of the so-called "Troubles", and targeting the Orangemen and Limies.

Since the Good Friday Agreement, it has become much more peaceful in Northern Ireland: the IRA disarmed (although it is believed that some weapons were retained) and the IRA announced an end to its armed activities in 2005. There have been no terrorist incidents since 2000 by the IRA. However, there are many marches in Northern Ireland, which can become violent. Nevertheless, the peace process is currently successful.

Please do not use the term "Limys" (which is not spelt "Limies"), as it is a racist term.

The term "Limy" goes back 500 years when England was a sea power. They would bring barrels of limes on the ships to keep the crew from getting scurvy. It is not a racist term.

DC, The term limey, may for some have become a raceists term, but that person is using incorrectly. Dizzy was perfectly clear in his statement. If you want to adhere to an incorrect definition It is your choice, but the term simply means a sailor who eats lime to keep from getting scurvey, a malnutrition disease.

I am aware of the origins of the word Limey, however, I am not North American, thus I do not know how the word is intended to be received, and I only know how fellow Englishmen interpret the word. I must add, that Britons generally do not find Limey to be offensive; it is probably similar to the American interpretation of the word Yankee.

However, I interpret its use in the post, as a word intended to be derogatory.

Weather a word is interpreted as derogatory depends on how thick, or thin, ones skin is. Me? I am a far right Neocon American, with Nazi, and Mick blood.
