'US, Israel planned ME war'
13/08/2006 11:06 - (SA)

US 'arming Israel'

New York - The US government was closely involved in the planning of Israel's military operations against Islamic militant group Hezbollah even before the July 12 kidnapping of two Israeli soldiers, The New Yorker magazine reported in its latest issue.

The kidnapping triggered a month-long Israeli operation in South Lebanon that is expected to come to an end on Monday.

But Pulitzer Prize-winning US journalist Seymour Hersh writes that President George W Bush and vice president Dick Cheney were convinced that a successful Israeli bombing campaign against Hezbollah could ease Israel's security concerns and also serve as a prelude to a potential US pre-emptive attack to destroy Iran's nuclear installations.

Citing an unnamed Middle East expert with knowledge of the current thinking of the Israeli and US governments, Israel had devised a plan for attacking Hezbollah - and shared it with Bush administration officials - well before the July 12 kidnappings.

The expert added that the White House had several reasons for supporting a bombing campaign, the report said.

If there was to be a military option against Iran, it had to get rid of the weapons Hezbollah could use in a potential retaliation against Israel, Hersh writes.

Citing a US government consultant with close ties to Israel, Hersh also reports that earlier this summer, before the Hezbollah kidnappings, several Israeli officials visited Washington "to get a green light" for a bombing operation following a Hezbollah provocation, and "to find out how much the United States would bear".

"The Israelis told us it would be a cheap war with many benefits," the magazine quotes the consultant as saying. "Why oppose it? We'll be able to hunt down and bomb missiles, tunnels, and bunkers from the air. It would be a demo for Iran."

US government officials have denied the charges.

Nonetheless, Hersh writes, a former senior intelligence official says some officers serving with the Joint Chiefs of Staff remain deeply concerned that the administration will have a far more positive assessment of the air campaign than they should.

"There is no way that (defence secretary Donald) Rumsfeld and Cheney will draw the right conclusion about this," the report quotes the former official as saying. "When the smoke clears, they'll say it was a success, and they'll draw reinforcement for their plan to attack Iran."

>>>Convinced of what? That Sharon was right when he said "we control the United States." I've been convinced of that for many years now.

Convinced that a terrorist group is dangerous. That is proven. So the US was helping Israel prepare for when Hezbullah attacked again. Since Israel pulled out Hezbullah as been lobbing rockets at them.
What will it take?
I ask my self that all the time. What will it take to prove to some people that we aren't as safe as they think and this is not the safe world that they think. You would think that 9-11 would do just that but apparently not. People wake up Being an American doesn't make us safe. There are people and countries that want us dead.

Why do they want us dead? Because they hate out freedom? How about our Foreign Policy and support of Israel. You know something is up when Shia and Sunnis even Persians would come together against a nation "Israeli and USA" We can't get Sunnis and Shiites to come together in Iraq for the good of their own country, but they would come together to fight USA and Israel.

By the way..
A loyal friend sticks up when outnumbered and constantly threatened..
Like for almost fifty years now.
The world was shaken when the US cut and ran from Vietnam..
Iran..
Mogadishu..

do you think the world lost faith in our loyalties from those craven acts?

Do you think they were disillusioned when we allowed the baathist nazis
( and the other stripes of hate) to cut off our civilizations lifeblood
( oil) and allow blackmail?
Do you respect someone who is a weak friend?

Thats bullshit. Israeli officials went to the US because they had placed orders for US military technology and supplies. They were not yet delivered when Hezbollah attacked, and when Hezbollah did attack, Israel pressured the US for faster delivery.

The US has no realistic option of engaging Iran in the near future either. One hand in Afghanistan, the other hand in Iraq. Calling up reserves and forced double tours. By all means the US military is overextended and they know it.

If Israel themselves had indeed pre-planned this attack on Hezbollah, this would have been the worst possible time to execute it- in the middle of a military operation in the Gaza strip. Is that realistic? Absolutely not.

The fact is that Hezbollah was used as a tool to distract the world from Iran's nuclear weapons program. Have you noticed how quiet things have gone on that subject?

Unhappy I'm convinced - that Israel is Anti-Christian

I'm convinced that American Christians should not die to protect Israel, a nation that built a wall through the property of the Santa Marta Monastery separating the Church from the parish proving their Anti-Christian bias.

We Dumb White Christians (DWC) better wake up - we have bailed Israel out at great cost and peril too many times - and their thanks is to be Anti-Christian.

The Israelis are correct about one thing: We are DWCs!

This does not surprise me becuse the lastest incarnations of both of our governments are ultra-conservative and they practically mirror one another.

So Spitty, you would have us turn our back on Isreal? That would really make Arab terrorists happy that they had acheived their goals.

By deserting Isreal we would tell the world once again that we are weak and have no loyalities to anyone.
