I honestly don't think we owe anyone anything for the past. It was a means to get us here to the present. Nearly everyone could go bact in their family history and find someone who was a slave. The romans owned slaves from just about everywhere.

I think refering to it all the time will keep it current in minds that don't recall it. Aside from the lesson it teaches, drumming up the past keeps us at arms length from any real co-opperation or equality.
