McCain: Outlaw Abortion
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/articl...p172357S77.DTL
I saw the thread title on sfgate.com which is the website for the San Francsico Chronicle.
This was there headline and then this is what the article is titled:
Quote:
|
McCain: Roe V. Wade Should Be Overturned
|
I find that interesting.
Quote:
Republican presidential candidate John McCain, looking to improve his standing with the party's conservative voters, said Sunday the court decision that legalized abortion should be overturned.
"I do not support Roe versus Wade. It should be overturned," the Arizona senator told about 800 people in South Carolina, one of the early voting states.
|
I guess he is trying to regain the mantle of conservative that he had .....I don't know when.
Anyway, this might help him in the primary but will help him to lose the general.
Same thing with his un-nuanced position on Iraq.

Well is that because he wants Roe overturned?
Because he has had that position all along.
Are you reacting to the headline that the Chronicle employed?
I think that Roe's penumbras and emanations are an absolute affront to the constitution.

I am not a constructionist so I don't agree at all with you...I think Harry Blackmun had it right on this one.
McCain takes the tact he wants to when he wants to. He took a more moderate view when going up against Bush in 2000.

I agree with McCain on this one*, but I don't think it was a good move politically, and I don't think anyone, especially conservatives, will buy his new found strict constructionism, since he has shown such disdain for the Constitution in the past when it conflicted with his pet cause, campaign finance reform. He should've just stood on his 100% pro-life Senate voting record to win over social conservatives.
*That is, I agree with the sentiment that Roe was bad law, with only a flimsy constitutional justification, and should be overturned because of that. But I'm not a pro-lifer. I favor abortion being legal (with reasonable restrictions) on a state-by-state basis.

This is McCain embracing his base. That's all it is. Roe v. Wade won't be overturned by McCain, the Supreme's (not the band ) are the only ones that can overturn something.
It's political posturing. Both sides do it.

Deadshot, your are correct here and it also shows me that McCain will say or do anything to get elected. I will not be voting for him unless he is running against your crew.

Hypothetical here Rob. If the democrats put forth a canidate (moderate to be sure) that came closer to embracing your values than say McCain, would you vote for them?

Freedom, I have to say that is a maybe, because at the present time there are not any front runners that come close to my values. But I will cast a vote and not stay at home.

I should have qualified my question. The reason I ask is that I have thought that I would vote for Hagel, or McCain (though now I see what ya'll mean about him) if the Democrats nomination leans too far left. However, my fear would be that, once in office, the political pressure from the far right, would cause that person to move away from the reasons I voted him.
So here are my thoughts. Should I vote for a known (far left candidate) that I know where he/she stands, or an unknown that might let political pressure change his/her stance. The reverse could be said for a republican thinking of voting for a democrat.
