Default Sarah Palin and reverse sexism

Am I crazy or does Sarah Palin get off with a whole hell of a lot of shit that no man, nor less-attractive woman would? Forget the inability to answer questions and the slim resume, but look at her behavior. I like lists.

1. She refers to her husband as "First Dude." Imagine calling Nancy Reagan "First Chick." That sort of thing may be fine locally, and I understand it offers them real-person bonafides, but that's supremely unprofessional, especially for a history-making candidacy. By default, the next First Gentleman would have to fight off the title.

2. The winking. Come on. Seriously. If Joe Biden was up there winking and blowing kisses and giving shout-outs to 3rd grade classes, we (both liberal and conservative) would run him out of town on a rail for being unprofessional. This is a serious job and we need a serious person to fill it. She should present herself to us in the same manner that she would present herself to the world and I don't want her winking and blowing kisses at the UN.

3. Refusing to answer questions. I don't just mean at the debate, but also in the media. Nobody in the history of presidential debates has ever looked into the camera and declared that they weren't going to answer the questions. Again, you can't do that on the world stage. If you want to talk around it, fine, but don't just blow off the questions. Furthermore, we would never accept a little-known man with a thin resume to outright duck interviews with the real media. Meet the Press is not "gotcha journalism." If elected, she would be the least-known candidate in American history.

4. This is the worst example yet. At a speech yesterday, someone in the audience shouted, "Sarah's hot!" Sarah halted her speech, winked in the direction of the shout and replied, "now, what's that got to do with anything?" in a flirtatious tone, to the raucous applause of the audience. This is in a long list of sexist references to the governor by her own partisans. There have been "Hoosiers for the Hottie" buttons, "Coldest state, hottest governor" bumper stickers, and articles referring to conservative columnists becoming erect watching her debate performance. No other woman would accept this. In any other workplace, the woman would be disgusted and rightfully so, but for Sarah Palin, it's just fine. In the 29 seconds in which she was recorded speaking with an Arab leader, the conversation centered on the man saying she was prettier in person, asking for a hug, telling her he could now see why America had fallen in love with her, and saying on his next visit he would give her a kiss.

Women have fought for decades to be able to go to work and not have men whistle at them and call them hot and sexy. Sarah Palin would set this movement back decades.

Yeah Sarah Palin is one hot momma. But I think your trippin on the whole reverse sexism. The being "unknown" thing okay you have a slight point. But on the contrary Barrack Obama wrote a book about himself, and talks FOREVER and nobody still knows a d@mn thing about the guy. They might think they do.

So you can honestly say you would take someone like Janet Reno or Margaret Thatcher seriously if they winked and blew kisses during a debate? For real? What if Mitt Romney did it? He's a good looking guy, would you want him winking and blowing kisses during the debate?

The problem with the "nobody knows Obama" argument is that it's not based on anything and it's poorly executed. He's been in the national spotlight for over two years now and has spent significant time in every state because of the primary. You can't tell people they don't know someone when they already feel like they do. Secondly, it's poorly executed. If they started this back in March when it became mathematically obvious that he would be the candidate, it may have worked. If McCain would have said these things to his face, it may have worked. But when you talk shit behind somebody's back to the reddest of red districts in Florida and then neglect to do so the very next day when the guy shares a stage with you, it looks very calculated. Everyone sees through what they're trying to do.

I'll just leave you with this to ponder, he's a lawyer and a damn good one. And look man Sarah Palin is a good looking woman. Attractive women are treated differantly than everybody else, so in effect they act a little different. But that has nothing to do with her intelligence or ability to fulfill the job. Saying otherwise is trashtalking without substance the same way democrats claim the right do to Obama.

edit: the whole "nobody know obama" thing is based on the fact that everytime we think we do another scandal about his past comes up. Nobody can piece together the puzzle and say what he's all about. Sarah palin on the other hand, I can describe her in one sentance. Sarah Palin is an evangelical christian , see no suprise there

Just curious...what "another scandal about his past" are you referring to?

(I typed that and then almost didn't post because once again, the thread gets side tracked...but I am curious...what scandal that hasn't been brought up before are we looking at here?)

I never said because she's attractive that means she can't do her job. What I said was that she portrays the typical 1990s bimbo when she winks and acts like somebody's ditzy prom date. We would never accept that from any man, and the point of the women's lib movement was to be treated equally.

Hey Brian, nice to see ya back. I was bummed when you didn't stick around the first time..........

Let me start by saying, I like Sarah Palin. I think it is fair when her slim resume is questioned. I've stated before that I don't understand why it has been brought up about her being VP and leaving her kids alone, etc. The left has fought for so called equal rights for women, but then they judge Palin for wanting a career in politics. Hey, personally it wouldn't be for me. I'm mainly a stay at home mom (I do teach approx. 10 hours a week). But, I'm not going to question her decision. I think that is sexist. No one questions when a man pursues a career how it will affect his kids.

I have to agree that focusing on Sarah's looks is really a set back. The reverse happened to Hillary............her not so good looks have been focused on. As a woman, I experience this all the time. You (if I recall correctly) are black so you know a different experience and how you are looked at......

It's good to be back. I just couldn't take the constant primary back-and-forth anymore and needed some time to chill. The discussion between my Black friends has turned to Barack Obama vis a vis Sarah Palin. If someone chose the first Black VP and the guy came out in a tall tee, baggy jeans, gold teeth, and a doo-rag, we would be super pissed. I have been wondering what women who had to deal with the catcalls and whistles in the workplace feel when they hear her referred to as sexy and hot. Talk about lowest common denominator.
