Which school districts? How many are there? I believe that in Florida a parent can exempt their children from any public school assignment for religious/moral reasons and request an alternative assignment.

Look at the fact that many if not all districts now require "community service" in order to graduate.
Which school districts? How many are there? What does “community service” mean?

Furthermore, look at the fact they want to eliminate grading and other methods of determining how well the student is progressing.
Which school districts? How many are there? What you describe reminds me more of Christian academies rather than public schools. I lost my first Christian school teaching job because I gave out bad grades to students that earned bad grades on the basis of the amount of work they turned in (I wasn’t even grading on accuracy).

WHY? because public education in america is lacking.
I agree with this and have for years. I have studied education in college and both my parents are retired teachers. I have come up with a system but it is still a work in progress. If anyone wants to give me feed back it would be very helpful. The school system should not place you on an educational level based on your age. Different students think in different ways. Some students think faster than others. I think that students should be allowed to progress at their own level. Students should have twelve levels of schooling which they have to pass many tests in order to complete. Students will be separated into classrooms based on their level not age. Students will learn their core class subjects with their level and then separate into their age groups for elective classes like gym, dance, etc. Once students pass level twelve they will graduate. Students will move through buildings as they do now. They will have a deadline of twelve years to complete these levels. There will be other deadlines along the way. Students will be taught based on how they learn best and will take tests that will put them into groups associated with their learning style. This program would allow students to graduate at their own pace without sacrificing any of the education. Any questions?

Teacher's Unions put a stranglehold on public schools among other things. Basically making it impossible to fire incompetent or underacheiving teachers.

We need to privatize. Remove schooling from government, as well as local governmental control. Politics should not play a role in our childrens education.

When you privatize, use vouchers and allow upper middle class and upper class parents fit the bill. It would literally cut the spending drasticallly and we wouldnt be propping up failing schools for years and years, and allowing elected school board members using the school system to further political bias.

"Also since the Teachers Unions are predominately left wing ex hippies"

>>>1) Most teachers were born AFTER the hippie movement so I doubt that many are leftwing ex-hippies. 2) Maybe the answer is to get more rightwing teachers, eh? The teacher applications do not ask your political affiliation. 3) You suckers whine continuously, but you almost never step up to the plate.

You missed my point. The school should teach how our goverment works and also teach children history but not teach them the teachers political views.

That is tricky to do in American history and politics. I actually had a teacher in school who covered all sides of the spectrum when he taught government. Kind of refreshing to hear all sides of the story, instead of a leftist or neocon rant about the evils of the other side.

But I do stand by privatization, its the only feasible option to fix a broken system.
