Default Mother Superior: MySpace or school, your choice

Quote:
According to reports, Sister Margaret Van Velzen has sent out an edict instructing students to take down their pages or face suspension from school. Families are expected to support the school's policy, which it says is aimed at keeping the students safe.

It's the new form of school bullying. I watched a Dateline that did a study...females are cruel! Should they be made to take their spaces down? I'm not a fan of myspace or similar webpages, but it's freedom of speech. No, they shouldn't be made to take it down.

I don't have a myspace but I noticed quite a few people in my neighborhood do. I was totally shocked to see people I knew. And they have pictures of their relatives on it too. It's like I now know some people much better than I think I should. Still it's up to them, not some authoritarian, to say what they can or can't do.

My spouse or I don't have a myspace, either, nor do our kids. We've talked to our 6th grader about myspace and said it's "not her thing" but she does have friends that are 11 and 12 years old that have a myspace. But, I agree, freedom of speech, even if it's sensory or information overload.

They really only have the right to ban such crap at school, but not in the home. I disagree with the edict, but I am no fan of myspace. I think any parent that allows their young teens to have a myspace page is naive and disconnected.

Did you just say "freedom of speech?" Like wanting to wear a pair of jeans and a polo shirt to a public school.
