How many of these countries that spend less per pupil than the U.S. does for public education have a national public school system, i.e., a single set of standards that all pupils, schools and teachers must meet? Do they spend less per pupil because of economies of scale- they mass produce a single set of textbooks for the entire country where America may demand thousands of different versions of a textbook for the same subject and grade because each state and county school system can set its own standards?

Such low student to teacher ratios are not uncommon in the Christian academies where I live, while it was not uncommon for my public school classrooms to have as many as 30 students for 1 teacher. A single teacher can well handle a large number of well-behaved students. But no amount of teachers can teach in a classroom that has even one student who is hell-bent on being a brat and whom the parents or the school refuse to discipline.

a home schooled child is getting an education only as good as the parents got one. some parents are not qualified. i have questions about charter schools. some of the teachers do not seem to be qualified either. tutors might be the answer for some.

i could do without the social activity that my granddaugher is exposed to every day. who wears what? who likes who? and who has the most stuff, are some of the things i object to. it is a puzzle.

I suspect what you are smelling is your own breath which reeks of bullshit. Anyway, who'd want to corner you at all?

I don't think money is the issue, the issue is having compent teachers and getting rid of the teachers unions, so that a teacher not making the grade can be let go.

George, I agree with you 100% on this. Society says that teachers aren't important enough to get our best to teach our children.

How much is enough for a teacher? How much do teachers make now? What would it take to attract the 'best" teachers?
