    You might be correct in stating that we all don't have the same level of intelligence, but we all have the same ability to learn....naturally with a few exceptions that do indeed have some legit handicap. So there is no excuse not to learn. The difference is the ability of the teachers who teach. There is a serious difference between a teacher and a good teacher.

    I hear teachers complaining of too big of classes today. I hear the average class is under 20 students. When I started school there was an average of 35-40 kids in a class, when I graduated HS it was already down to 20-25 kids. We managed to learn with 35 -40 kids....I guess we had real teachers then. One thing not in the teachers favor of today....their hands are tied by both legalities concerning punnishment and also they have to deal with the lack of parental input at home.....two important things they have to deal with today.

    Yet, in my day, those issues were not a common thing, they were there but was not common. In HS I couldn't tell you a good teacher from a bad one, that is a lesson I figured out in life a bit further down the road. I had a husband (Science) teacher...I was an A student, and his wife (French) teacher.... I was a F student. Come parent / teacher day they both would talk to make sure they had the same student,,,, an A in one class an F in the other didn't make sense. My guidance counceler was a waste of time, they helped set your classes up in 9th grade, I don't think I saw him again till almost graduation when I was called in and asked what I wanted to do when I got out of school. A little late in the game to guide me I think...I'm on my way out the door.

    In my opinion, most teachers are over paid...... The president wants to solve the education systems problems by throwing good money after bad at it.....that is not the answer. A little money in the right places I agree will help, but good teachers are a must and a solid home is a definate must, you will be hard pressed to get buy without support at home.....BUT NOT IMPOSSIBLE. The government wants to reward good teachers....I kinda of figured that they still had a job was reward for doing their job. I would like to see what in the government's eye, constitutes a good teacher. This tenior thing.I definately feel is wrong. I feel it is wrong in any job...all that is is a guarantee that you get to a certain point in your career and you can fuck up all you want and it is next to impossible to get fired. I find serious fault in that....I feel....keep up the good work, you keep your job and you get raises like normal working people.........Bill

    Ignorance and stupidity are different. Stupidity can be fixed to an extent, everyone can learn something. Ignorant people don't want to learn. I've found both types and it sucks that these two are grouped together.
    Not all public schools suck. Not all private schools are good. Not all inner city/minority students are a problem, and only want to rap or hoop.

    People are dumb for many reasons. Our education system is about 60% of that problem. The welfare state, which encourages illegitimate children and maintains a cycle of poverty that also produces our gang banging youth, drug users, and destroys urban areas. If you want to fix education, end welfare and lazy people will be weeded out of society along with drug addicts and illegitimacy would decline.

    People would start working hard to get out of poverty. Which would require a free market to supply jobs and encourage entrepreneurship.

    Then you would see kids who have a work ethic in schools who would get there shit together.

    Why does everybody assume that everyone on welfare is lazy? It's not true, and this is one subject I can speak on fairly confidently. Welfare kids aren't stupid, just uneducated. And usually, that's not their fault...

    agreed.

    the schools can't afford to buy new materials - some classes actually don't have enough books. some teachers buy their own supplies.

    how can you learn like that?

    Poor quality school funding
    apathetic teachers
    institutional racism
    class oriented discrimination

    all combine to produce the pockets of absolutely shitty schools we have in areas around the nation...we definitively need REAL education reform...its nearly a national defense problem in my opinion
