Default NCLB is working!

Republicans are dragging kicking and screaming Democrats into the 21st century.

More schools to face law's consequences - Yahoo! News

By NANCY ZUCKERBROD, AP Education Writer Tue May 20, 12:16 AM ET

WASHINGTON - Pink slips for principals and teachers. School-funded tutoring for poor kids. Schools are increasingly looking at those kind of consequences for failing to raise math and reading scores.

The federal No Child Left Behind law says that by the 2013-14 school year all students must pass state tests in these subjects.

About half of the states have steady annual goals for increasing the percentage of students passing, or working at their proper grade level. But the other half set the bar very low early on, and starting about now expect big annual achievement gains, according to a report being released Tuesday by the nonpartisan Center on Education Policy.

Educators liken the latter strategy to a balloon payment mortgage, in which home owners have a final payment that is much larger than previous ones.

It's unlikely that states that took that approach can make the kind of gains expected, said Jack Jennings, the center's president.

Schools that don't hit testing benchmarks for two years or longer face consequences that become increasingly stiff each year — from having to transport children to higher-performing schools and paying for tutoring to replacing staff thought to be a part of a school's problems.

Nearly 11,000 schools, or a little more than 10 percent of all public schools — from elementary to high school — have missed their state-set progress goals and are taking corrective steps, according to the Education Department.

That number has been rising slowly and is expected to grow at a faster clip over the next few years.

I don't see that it works at all.

Teachers are being forced to do their job or they are gone.
This means children are getting a better education.
Thank you President Bush!

Your gonna have to elaborate more, I think NCLB was designed to do more than that. Besides its kinda dumb to blame teachears for inept pupils. After all its not like you can make kids study. Besides the article you posted was talking about how the schools would be punished, not the teachears.

This means lousy teachers and principals are being fired. In turn, our kids have better teachers and these teachers are forced to do their job or they also get fired.

A certain amount of failure is expected and has been taken into consideration.

The taxpayers are getting better results for their bucks.

This is 100% positive for our children!

Schools don't have any money. Where is this funding supposed to come from when the schools are broke? This means lousy teachers and principals are being fired. Like I already said, it doesn't mean that at all, some kids don't want to learn, it doesn't mean their teachear sucks. Some people are just plain dumb, that also is not the fault of their teachear or principal. This sounds like a crock to me. In turn, our kids have better teachers and these teachers are forced to do their job or they also get fired.

Until the school pays so many fines they can't afford to hire teachears at all. Then what? Doesn't sound positive to me.

Isn't it fun to not require students and parents to take responsibility for their own actions?

Teachers as scapegoats. It would serve this country right if no one wanted to become a teacher anymore. Who would want to be treated so shabbily for something they have very little control over.

Not so fast there.

I remember when Clinton was in office and this child abuse thing was being pushed in public schools. Teachers were telling students "If your parents yell at you, it's abuse, call Child Protective Services, here is their phone number. If your parents spank you, it's abuse, call CPS"

This goes back to the 60s, when Liberals were purposely trying to create chaos between parents and their children. This is how Liberals would work their way into influencing kids.

Now, it's time for Teachers to eat the meal they prepared for themselves.
It's strange, an action has an ending result.
