Thumbs up Philly school effort cuts weight gain

Again, the schools being babysitters, WTF are the parents??? I pack my kids lunches and neither have the options at school. My 12 year old won't even drink soda even if it's the only option.

"It's a really dramatic effect from a public health point of view. That's the good news," said Gary Foster, director of the Center for Obesity Research and Education at Temple University. He is also the lead author of the Philadelphia schools study being published Monday in the April issue of Pediatrics.

The bad news: There were still plenty of new overweight kids in the five schools — over 7 percent of them became overweight compared to the 15 percent in the schools that didn't make changes."

Clinton signed an executive order eliminating mandatory PE classes in Public schools in the 90s.
At the time, I remember Liberals justifying this by saying "Some kids are afraid to shower with other kids" or "Kids are demoralized by PE classes when someone can run faster or climb faster"

Yeah, while he was jogging and stopping at McD's and really want another wide load in the White house.

Fortunately, our kids have been in private until the last 2 years and right now are on a military post school. PE is mandatory 3x a week for elementary, and 5x a week for 6th grade. NO SODA OR CANDY MACHINES in the school either.

Then we wonder why our children score well below other industrialized nations. Our schools are busy being the parents. No time to teach the curriculum.

BTW, there is NO reason for junk food and soda in schools.

Carson, I was referring to this time and effort they are putting into weighing kids and doing incentive programs, etc.

I just know from experience that all these "programs" cut into instructional time. I taught 4th/5th grade.

I have nothing against schools adopting healthier attitudes, but it just seems like these warm fuzzy things cut into learning the basics.

If parents are sending there children to school obese at a alarming rate then you have to expect some reaction from our government run schools, schools function the best when the fundamentals are taken care of at home phyiscal health, mental health, etc.

A truly healthy attitude would be that bad foods like drugs are readily available around you and you have to ignore the temptations. When you can I guess
