What constitues a good public education?
What do posters think a student should be taught to have an education that will allow growth for themselves and the country as a whole?
I think that Math, History, Science and literature is just a start of understanding the world around us.

I think the only "required" subjects should be English Literature and Comprehension, basic math to teach you how to balance your check book, understand interest, make change without having to take your shoes off etc, History, real history like as it found in Samuel Elliot Morrison's Oxford History of the American People but include everyone, not just white people. I also think history should be taught like an unbiased news report, not like CNN news. I think we should teach Earth Science, biology, astonomy, rudimentary chemistry. Teach children the basics and have available for those with the apptitude increased levels of education. Have shop and home economics for both males and females. And reinstate gym classes as a requirement. I would also include art and music appreciation. A class on civics or social studies should be taugh as should geography, both physical and cultural geography
Sex ed, religious explanations for scientific discoveries, myths regarding global warming and any class that is designed to change the culture as a whole should be banned banned banned.

I think you have to have a broad curriculum, unlike Nathan. Both of you guys didn't mention Computer Science, which I think is important. I'd also add Physical Education and Music to the list. Those things that I'd take off the list, or leave as electives would be Languages, High Math (Calculas, etc.), High Science (Advanced Biology, etc.) and things that are more specific. But if I'm not mistaken, beyond a language requirement most schools only require the basics of Math (2 years worth) and Science (3 years worth) anyway.
I think most high schoolers today are better educated and smarter then other generations. They simply have more tools then any of us EVER had!
One last caveat here, Sex-Ed MUST be taught. I want my kids knowledgable about the dangers of sex in the 21st century. I want my kids not to get preggers!

Of course I think some sort of computer classes are important but it must be controled. I think that music and art are also great but as far as the sex ed, that is the parents job.

No such thing as a good public Education. Especially since we have the crappiest school institutions in the 1st world, even among some 3rd world nations...

I agree on the sex ed. Deadshot, why do you think you are incompetent in teaching your children about sex. How long should a class on sex ed last - 20 minutes tops? Anything over that is sexual mores and that is something you should be teaching, not the school.
Don't want your kids to get pregnant, take them to church religiously (pardon the pun). Give them some guidelines and rules to follow. I have three daughters and none of them were pregnant before they were married.

I am game for that, just give me a voucher so that I pay for the education.

That is exactly what the current system of private vs public schools is doing today. Those attending private school are so much better educated than those poor shulbs attending public schools they have a tremendous advantage over them.

Oh please. It needs to be taught because so many parents just completely fail. My dad died when I was young, my mom was too embarrassed to talk about it with me OR my sister! She was a very religious woman (Christian), but really old school.....
If it wasn't for health class I would've had to figure it ALL out myself...or believe the stupid crap teenagers tell each other about it....
It is a parents job, yes, but way too often they fail.
More knowledge is always better than less. What are you afraid of here Nathan? That public education is going to "make" people gay?
