It is a parents job, yes, but way too often they fail.

More knowledge is always better than less. What are you afraid of here Nathan? That public education is going to "make" people gay?

People have been procreating for eons. We don't need public schools to tell our children about sex education. Its a parental thing and should remain a parental issue. Keep it out of the schools period.

And spreading diseases along with it. Modern science, along with education, has helped change that.

Nathan, I don't agree with this at all...being in that 'industry.' It has been proven over and over the private schools can accept only the ones they want to accept and are not required to report that greasy underside of the statistics they have.

Lets go back to my earlier thread about American schools. I believe public schools are not as good as they should be because they try to be all things to all people. Perhaps if you could pick your school based on your own talents (or have your parents do it for you) we would all be better off.

See I didn't even mention I think public schools are for the shit because ofthe NEA

Many districts already do this.

What if you basically have NO talents and are just...well...dumb and lazy? Who tries to educate those, the private school sees them as useless and doesn't want to count them as a statistic of theirs.

The NEA has done what?

Nice try but there are a lot of other factors. The sexual revolution and women becoming as sexually active as men probably had more to do with it. Unless you have some hard facts your comment is purely anecdotal at best.

actually, infection rates were declining until the late 1990's.

...about the time of the big " Abstinence only" push.....

Ya got it backwards Nathan......

I believe that parents should tell there kids about sex, but here's the problem, Nate and rob.

What if your daughter wants to know about the pill and you don't tell her?
What if your son wants to know about condoms and you don't tell him?

See the problems? Parents many times impose their own morals when telling their kids about sex. A good Sex education takes the morality out of the question and deals in cold hard facts.

When people bring this example of parents teaching versus the teacher education I always think back to an old John Wayne movie, El Dorado. In it a young man is gut shot by Wayne and the boy kills himself because his father told him that he'd die a horrible death if he was ever gut shot. It wasn't true. That's the problem with parents explaining Sex Ed. Many won't give the kids the whole story or will tell them of their own beliefs leaving out the facts.

That's bad for everyone.

I agree that some parents are not doing their jobs. I was very open with my kids when they were growing up. I told them that I would prefer they wait to experiment with sex but also told them how to protect themselves.
