Badmutha-wannabe:

Yet another scapegoat from a supposed believer in personal responsibility. Do you blame the unions for your ignorance?

How about the concept that students (and their parents) might be a little responsible for their failure to learn?

Well Bonzo, you know what I say--"better to have a scapegoat than to be one"

Unions hinder the ability to fire and get rid of incompetent teachers, administrators and so on. Teacher's Unions keep bad teachers on the payroll. They hinder Teaching from being a sought after job. Thus making the quality of people working in that field lower.

Lastly, Schools should never be a Government institution. Even Socialist Nordic Countries realize this. They give tuition money to students to spend on private schools. If the parents or child do not like the school they take their money elsewhere.

Spend all you like on Student's Education if you must. Just do not spend it on schools.

Satv:

would sincerely hope that at least some people here would agree to get the Federal, State and County Governments out of Schools. Leave it to the Communities. Lastly, allow for vouchers for Private Schools. It benefits everyone if we can give parents a Choice again.

People are afraid of vouchers because it would lead to the inevitable conclusion that Public Schools are a detriment to Education, Governmental Budgets and our Children's and thus our Nation's future.

If a school gets more "chosen" and gets more students, just where do you think the teachers will come from to staff your simple-minded concept? The same teachers you now blame will be hired to fill the need in a new location.

As for choosing a private school, the average tuition is several thousand dollars. A voucher does nothing but provide welfare to people who don't need it. Parochial schools are cheaper, but that pesky Constitution gets in the way again.

As for such schools supposedly performing better, they get the most motivated students with the most attentive parents. They can expel pretty much any student they want to get rid of.

In the end it comes down to the fact that simplistic solutions are for simple minds.

Are these the people that hire teachers? And we wonder why kids aren't learning?

Unions make sure teachers are not fired for whimsical reasons...They can be fired and are, frequently...but the districts need to have a legitimate reason.
