"My daughter is big boned"
I've got a bone to pick here. parents need to quit coddling their kids and make them eat right and excerise!
http://www.9news.com/news/article.aspx?storyid=78903:
As a family, we are physically active. My daughters have taken gymnastic or dance lessons since they were 18 months old. They both started playing soccer when they turned 4 years old. My younger one gave it up this year for cheerleading, which is essentially gymnastics. In elementary school I did dance and track. In middle school, the early 1980's, I was the school's track team, volleyball and softball. In high school, I just did volleybal and softball. My husband was on the school's team of basketball and football. He has always been a coach for our kids soccer teams. Of course he also does an hour of Army physical training 5 days a week since 1990.
My kids started school in the years 2000 and 2003, every year and in every state we've lived in OK, VA, GA, and now AZ we have always gotten a health report sent home on the BMI. It's never an issue because we taught them how to eat properly and that excerise is something you have to do everyday of your life.

OB, when I was growing up, you couldn't keep me in the house if the weather was good. My parents encouraged physical activity by giving us chores if we hung around the house. Today we have computers in every home and too many tv's so kids aren't running around outside.

So make them join a sports team or decide the family will go out and do some exercise. It is up to the parents, right?
Or is the mother who bought her child bomb making books and an AK-47 doing the right thing as a parent? Or the parent who drown her children in the tub. She is correct?
Parents need to run the family and decide for the child but doing it with respect toward the child and the community. Just IMHO. And this if started early will be the child now and in the future who's health will be much better.
In my neighbornood, I see the children out playing and running, playing basket ball. In fact about every third house has a basketball set up in the driveway. So most parents it seems know how to be a parent.
But still last nights news ran a story about children clothing size becoming as adults to include XXX sizes. That is a out right shame and reflects on the parent in most cases. When I do go to the mall I see some very large size children and not to far behind the larger size parents and most head to the fast food stands. Besides being a bad sight it is a real shame. I can't recall one oversize kid in my different schools while growing up in the 50's-60's. Andthes echildren are not reacting to feefer and hunger.

Yes this does fall back on the parents. If you have kids you must take responsibilty for them and teach them what they need to do to live happy sucessful life. I told my kids that even though the country is a Democracy at home it was a dictaitorship.

computer's and TVs?
I'm guilty ... BIG TIME!
my son just turned 9 and has about 33 inch waist (but he is fairly tall).
when he was 4 we got him his first computer and by 6 (maybe 5) he had his first laptop - kid has an LCD TV in his room too ...
however; we do go fishing and hiking in the woods - trying to teach him how to spot deer tracks and other wildlife signs.
He will never have to buy a hunting or fishing license in this state - he has a life time license here!
if he ever needs food - he won't need to get into a food bank line and look for handouts!

This is obviously a little hypocritical, as you have posted over 11,000 times and would have had to spend time sitting in front of your computer in order to do this. However, I agree. There are too many distractions that keep our children inside. Parents should keep their children away from these distractions but they should not be attached to them themselves. Parents should excersize with their kids. Excersize and good health are just as important for adults. Instead of spending money each month for cable and video games parents should buy yearly passes for your local gym or recreation center. It will save you money. Also cutting down the amount of junk food that you buy will save more money.
