I am brand new here so if this has been discussed too much, please just blast me and we go on. But I am so angry about this that I have to get this out of my system. This looks like a great place to do this.
We have a child in middle school. This child has math class where she barely learns math. In social studies, she learns how to take the MATH portion of the Benchmark tests instead of what her class should be about. The reason for the Benchmark classes is so that the state can cheat on the stats about education in our state. I understand that many states do this.
That isn't all, of course. Most of the classes barely touch on what she should know. Her sister, who is in the top 1% of the state goes to a college prep school that only takes the top 2% in the state. They accept about 150 kids a year for the 11th grade. They only deal with 11th and 12th grade. When they graduate, the total of scholarships coming to the kids there is huge!! My niece is probably going to Yale who has been scouting her for a couple of years now. However, when she first got accepted there, she was in..are you ready for this...remedial classes because our school system didn't teach her much of what she needed to get good grades at that school.
The bottom line here is that there is a Dumbing Down of America and we are allowing it to happen when we allow this particular act to stand as it is.
Please tell me there are people here that agree with me. I feel like I am a lone voice around where I live.
