25 years ago I started a business. For almost a year I did do the work myself. I can still do every job in the business with the exception of computer programing, which is the highest paid position in the business by the way. I started hiring people after a year because I had more business than I could do by myself, even working 80 hours or more a week. I hired people for the salaries they would work for, in some cases minimum wage. I learned over the years that minimum wage people were worth exactly that, minimum wage, both to themselves and to the business. Over the years my payroll increased steadily to the point I was paying industry standard (well about minimum wage, plus health insurance and other benefits) As a business order I did not pay higher wages because I suddenly became a Democrat but because I wanted to purchase the best employees I could find. This is the same in any business. Minimum wage jobs are not now, nor were they ever, intended to be career choices. They are meant to be training jobs or positions for those so lacking in skill they could only sweep floors or put price tags on merchandise.

Increasing the minimum wage has another detriment that has never been discussed. Sincewe must pay more and more for employees it is in any business's self interest to hire the best person they can find. That is not unskilled minimum wage people. Therefore there are fewer and fewer opportunities for the unskilled to learn skills more than burger flipper jobs (which by the way can also lead to management jobs, there is no such thing as a dead end job, only dead end people). As we can no longer afford to hire and train unskilled workers we outsource more and more unskilled and semiskilled jobs to China and other third world countries. Then we whine about sending jobs overseas.

Not everyone in this country (or any country for that matter) is college material. Not everyone can do highly skilled technical labor. We are destroying the opportunity to teach those people who could learn craftsman type skills by not being able to hire them at the very bottom rung.
