You have visited this website because you are one of the 80 million Americans who now own shares of directly held stock, mutual funds, or 401(k) retirement plans. That makes you part of one of the most fundamental demographic shifts in modern America: the growing number of middle class families who own stock. This development has transformed both the political and economic structure of the country.
In 1989 just 30 percent of American households owned stock. Today, 52 percent of households own stock. In 1989, 28 percent of a family's financial assets were stocks and mutual funds. Today, 56 percent of families' financial assets are stocks and mutual funds. In 1989, shareholder wealth constituted just 60 percent of Gross Domestic Product (GDP), today it is 100 percent.

This dramatic shift in the economic and political structure is changing America. Roughly two out every three voters in the 2004 election will be investors. This makes the investor voter today's most powerful electoral voting bloc and as a result, investors now have the ability to effectuate serious change in America's political area.

With this rapid growth of investors, the decisions being made in Washington are increasingly impacting shareholders and their savings. Yet, some decision makers in Washington still do not understand this phenomenon of the investor class and believe the only people who own shares of stock are families named Kennedy and Rockefeller. These policymakers consistently oppose pro-shareholder legislation and reforms.

The facts show, however, that the new investor class majority is made up of people who work real jobs, take home a paycheck, and rely on that paycheck to get by each month. They are teachers, computer programmers, nurses, and Starbucks employees.

No matter what type of investment you own, you are a shareholder and you have a tangible stake in America's future. American Shareholders Association was founded to give a voice to people like you in the public policy debates that impact your savings and investment. With so many decisions being made in Congress affecting your investments, now is the most important time to stand up and be heard. We are here to fight for you and your investments.
And this wouldn't be the least bit biased would it.
